Resiliency

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Preferred Properties Land & Homes #18909

I was recently asked to give a talk to a Health Class at a local high school.  The topic was on: Resiliency.   I thought I would share a brief outline of my notes.  Most of us are affected by one or more ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences).  My talk was on how I overcame adversity through resiliency.

Why do we smile?  Did you know that if you smile - you change your entire bodies chemistry?

resilient children

What is the meaning of life?

My answer: To find meaning in life.

What does it mean to be resilient?

My answer: To bounce back when you feel like you are hitting bottom.

What does it mean to be successful?

My answer: Making a difference and truly being happy.

It is important to recognize yourself as a unique, special individual. . .You can do anything.

Reality: Lots of bad things happen to people and everyone seems to have their share - how do we deal with this?

  1. Don't feel sorry for yourself
  2. You cannot change the past so do not have regrets -you can only change the future (Don't cry over spilled milk).
  3. Learn from your mistakes
  4. Admit your mistakes, apologize, and move on. .  .Be quick to forgive and forget.?
  5. Forgiveness - of yourself and others.  Forgiveness is for your benefit - remember that!

Peer pressure:  guess what? It exists at every age so learn to deal with and stay true to who you are.

It doesn't matter what others think of you. . .Don't allow others to control you.  What matters is what you think of YOU!

If you say you can or you can't your right!

Helping to set new goals and think positive. . .

  1. See it
  2. Say it
  3. Hear it
  4. Write it
  5. Believe it

Coping Mechanisms when we are down - everyone should have several like:

  1. Power napping
  2. Special Pets
  3. Exercise or sports
  4. Prayer
  5. Music
  6. Journaling

Just important things to remember. Thanks for reading!

Trisha, so true that peer pressure exists at any age. The battles don't end at high school. Would be nice if they did. I'm sure you inspired many students during your talk.

Trisha, "Forgiveness is for your benefit..." This is so true and thanks for sharing your insights! Holding grudges and not forgiving others only poisons our minds. We will all be much better of if we would forgive each other and move on to bigger and better things.

Great post and I have to say peer pressure is nothing other than what we allow our "perception" of others opinion of us to be. If you feel it is important then it carries weight. If you dont then it has no sting!

being strong in yourself and who you are is key!!!

Kudos

Trisha, just saw Brian Buffini's webcast on 'BOUNCE'! Simple to say that harder you fall, the more the bounce is, provided you have that 'mo' in you, a desire in you to bounce!

Lovely post with great thoughts, thank you.

Trisha, that was a super topic - Resiliency - for your talk for the high school health class. The students were lucky to have you. Have 9 adult children and our family has been consistent through the years with some sayings:  (1) No Pity-Me parties, Please;  (2) You have a choice - TAKE THE HIGH ROAD.

Excellent talk and blog for that matter. I really like the part about admitting mistakes and going forward plus your oping mechanisms lists. I will suggest.. Making this speech to High Schoolers is an excellent idea.

Trisha,

It is also a fact that when you do something for someone else, or watch this type of event, your body chemistry benefits your immune system, which is one of the many reasons, we don't watch anything violent, because that also affects your body chemistry in a reverse way. A
