Digital Postcards...Yay or Nay?

Postcards can be a nice gesture in a world that, little by little, continues to dive into technological methods of communication.

Aside from face-to-face communication, postcards (or any handwritten note for the matter) provide a more intimate connection to people than just sending another email or text.

In light of this, LinkedIn has added a digital postcard option, according to an article in Inman.com, to its rooster of technical tools, which allow free-flowing communication with a personal touch.

I have yet to try this option. In fact, some of the comments make me weary of using it at all, but it's still good to know it's available, in case I ever want to use it.

The digital postcard allows the user to record their voice in an introduction message, add videos or SlideShare presentations, as well as photos or text. This postcard can be shared via LinkedIn, as an email to groups or individuals, or on a host of other social media sites.

It's interesting to see how even postcards are now living in the digital era, with the ability to record your voice at the push of a button.

Can it lead to more personalized interactions? Maybe, but it's still scary to think about. There has to be something scared left that technology hasn't touched.

If postcards can be pre-written now, what's the point of them?

To me, they were (still are) about taking the time to write down your message and sending it through the mail. If it can be sent at the push of a button, what separates it from email?

What are your thoughts on this: digital postcards...yay or nay?

Hi Phil - I'm not on LinkedIn (whole nother story), but the frequent e-mails that I get with digital e-mails all require me to click on a link to open them up. I'm not doing that, nor am I asking my clients and prospects to - if it's entirely visible in the body of the e-mail, I might consider it, but otherwise, nope.

Phil, Not sure about this. Will have to check it out but so far I agree with Dick.

Nay for me Phil.  If I'm sending information to a client that includes a link or a file attachment, I explain it fully so they know it's from me.  Likewise - I'll contact the sender of electronic transmissions to verify what's in it.  Better safe than sorry.  Mailing a card works best for me when using the personal touch.

Dick, sometimes thinking about our experiences and what we would or would not do is enough of a guide. If you don't think you would do it yourself, why would you ask your client to do it.

Helen & Larry, it is a possibly that it could be the "next big thing" but so far, I don't know. Maybe with more references or positive experiences from others, it may be good to try out in the future.

Rebecca, that is very true. Not only is it a hassle, it makes you seem untrustworthy in the long run. Not because of you but because people are getting wary of clicking on a link that sends them elsewhere. Either way, the personal touch we seek through these postcards are not found online.
