Have YOU Been Hacked?
Online Security Issues Raised Again

Once again, the news is filled with reports of a widespread hacking of social media sites, usernames, and passwords, etc. having taken place over the last month or so (Oct., Nov., 2013).  And once again, the matter of internet security is brought to the forefront of our minds ... or it should be ...

It's been reported that around 2 MILLION Facebook, Twitter, Google, LinkedIn, ADP, Yahoo accounts (and others) have been "hacked" and compromised via infected computers carrying malware.  The particular form of malware causing the latest issues is being detected increasingly often by cybersecurity firms.

At present it's not known for sure just how widespread this security breach is, but it's probably global in magnitude.  It's also not known if accounts were actually entered.  But there IS enough knowledge about this security compromise that you should be concerned that YOUR computer may have become infected and any accounts you have might now be compromised.

So what are the experts telling us we should do to protect ourselves at this point and in the future?

Take steps to make sure you have security software downloaded and working on your computer.  Make sure that security is on and up-to-date with the most current versions available.  Also make sure you download the most current "patches" for your browser(s), Java, and Adobe that are installed on your computer.

And most importantly ... immediately change and upgrade your passwords, especially those on your financial websites and accounts.  Actually investigate whether any suspicious activity has taken place in your accounts.

As always, I recommend that you check your Credit Report/Credit Scores out (at minimum) once a year to make sure that no errors or fraudulent activity have taken place and are showing there.  If in Illinois and the Chicagoland area, should you have questions regarding how to do this, contact me ... I'll be happy to assist.

The bottomline is:  Take action to protect yourself and your privacy after this hacking.  You'll be glad you did ...

I haven't Gene but know many who have. Some folks do not understand that if you are using a wireless network in a public place you could be hacked, I am not saying all are bad but I have heard about small networks in places like coffee houses that are not all that great to do things like online banking or sensitive work. Nice post

Thanks, Noah ... and you speak to why I use my own personal wifi when traveling or when meeting clients outside my own office or home.  Just safer.  We all need to take this seriously, no doubt ...

Gene, great reminder...I'm going to change or alter all my passwords, fortunately though I don't do any online banking just for this reason.

Hi Gene - I just read an article about how several thousand point-of-sale machines have been compromised - a potentially much worse scenario. I have no idea how much longer we'll be able to use the internet for any kind of commerce.

Lottie:  Hope it helps ... so thank you ...  and Thank You!!  lol

Nick:  I know many have the same reservations about doing so.  It's recommended that you change/update your password fairly often, if you do though ...

Dick:  Thank you for adding that info.  It proves the point that we all need to up our game regarding our security.  The crooks definitely are getting smarter, faster, and more aggressive ...

Gene: Don't use the same usernames and passwords for your very important accounts like financial as for the social media ones. Every time I go into Facebook, I get several spam emails using my "friends" names. The email has no content just a link and usually starts out with "Hey Hella". My REAL friends don't do this so I just delete them.

Even though there are many things that I don't do online, I still change my passwords on a regular basis. Thanks for the heads up.

Make it a great weekend!

Hella:  Great addition to the post ... thank you!  I've read where many do these very things ...

Thanks, Joe!  And your reminder to change passwords frequently is a good one ...

I have very complicated passwords.  And not the same password on multiple accounts.  Makes it less easier for me, but certainly a lot more secure.  I started on line using the same password on mulitple accounts, but soon realized that was not a clever idea.  Some of my accounts actually require a NEW password every 6 weeks to 13 weeks.  And don't allow you to use the previous one either.  Also a good idea.

Gene, We are all at risk and as long as these 'hackers' go unpunished, it will continue. Too bad they didn't use their knowledge for the better good of the world!
