What's it Like to Work in eXp's Cloud Office?

By
Real Estate Agent with eXp Realty

I remember the first time I heard the phrase "the cloud." It was when I bought my first iPad. The customer service person at the Apple store said something like "let's get you set up in the cloud."

Trying not to look totally clueless, I asked myself what could she possibly be talking about? Clouds are in the sky, right? How do you store information in the clouds?

Not long after that I realized while the term cloud sounded mysterious, all it really meant was that my information was being stored on a server somewhere and not on my machine.

Working in the eXp Cloud Office

Working in eXp Realty's cloud office is not that mysterious either. All that it really means is that I work in an office that's located on a server somewhere else. It's not across town, in another city or another state, it's online.

When I go to the cloud office, I don't even have to leave my home office. Instead, I go to a website. It's not just any website, it looks more like a video game.

exp realtys cloud office

When I enter what most of us just call "the space," my avatar, or icon appears at a welcome desk. From there I can right click and see a list of who else is currently in the office, or I can use the arrow keys on my computer to walk around and see who's there with my own eyes.

If there is a presentation going on, I can walk into the main area and listen to it. If I have a question about my transaction paperwork I can walk over to the transaction room and speak to one of the transaction team, or if have questions about anything related to internet marketing I can look for one of our three in-house tech support people (called WTM for Working the Magic).

When I find them, I'll click on a chair in the office they're in, my avatar will take a seat at a conference table and I'll talk to them using the microphone on my headset or on my earbuds.

Just like we were sitting at a real table.

Of course I'm not actually looking at them, I'm looking at their avatar, but to me it feels just the same.

Virtual Reality Becomes Normal Over Time

It feels just the same to me because I'm in the space three or four times a week. I never went to my RE/MAX office that many times in a week!

I will admit it feels a little artificial the first few times you are in the space, but over time the virtual reality world begins to feel very real.

In fact, the cloud office now feels so lifelike to me that I feel more connected to the people at eXp Realty than I've felt at the other "real" brokerages where I've worked.

Not only do I feel more connected, but I feel more supported too. Not only do I have fast and easy access to tech/internet support and transaction support people, I have easy access to other eXp agents around the country too, and many of these agents have excellent ideas to share!

I Feel More Connected Than Ever

Feeling connected is really important to me. So much so that I spent the last 4 or 5 years moving from brokerage to brokerage trying to find the right fit.

You see, I was so excited in 2009 to experience the effects that blogging had on my business that I practically ran up and down the hallways telling all the other agents in my office what I had learned. However, it didn't take me long to realize that they weren't listening, or if they were, they didn't have the ability, the interest or the commitment to blog for their business.

eXp Realty Helping HandThe same thing happened when I started using WordPress to make my own websites, when I started doing videos and when I started promoting my content on social media.

I was doing everything that I thought I was supposed to do to stay relevant online, and yet when I walked down the hallways of my conventional brick and mortar office, I felt unappreciated and misunderstood.

It's not like that at eXp. We have agents across the country who are doing the kind of things that I do to bring in business. From blogging to video, eXp Realty brokers, trainers and coaches are into it all.

However, that doesn't mean you have to be a whiz at all things technical to work with us, because we have tons of training to help less tech-savvy agents get up to speed.

The classes are done online, in the cloud office, and you can attend from the comfort of your home or anywhere else you have a good internet connection.

Take a Closer Look at eXp Realty

If you think this sounds interesting, why don't we schedule a time to go into the space and take a look around? You may like what you see.

I am glad it works for you.  I am one of those people who works better in the physical office than at home.

Tim, to each his own for sure, I've never done well in an old-fashioned office. Too many distractions for me.

When I moved over to eXp I was not completely sure about working from home. I have been paperless for about 5 years so the transition to a cloud based office was simple. I'm beyond glad that I did it because of the passive income potential that cannot be matched by any other real estate organization that I know of.

So far so good. I loved working in an office, but HATED the inefficiency due to the time lost at the water cooler. I'm happy to be at eXp

Working from home takes discipline, doesn't it John? But it's always worked well for me. See you in the clouds!

Rich, it's been a pleasure working and sharing with you and the many other amazingly talented people in the cloud. Like any great tool (smartphones, tablets, etc..) the cloud office connects people easily and across boundaries, and in the case of eXp connects real estate professionals from around the world.

For me, working in the cloud means less time and money spent driving to and from meetings, more frequent collaboration with thought leaders around the country, and more time for family and friends.

Thanks for stopping by Gabe. I wish more of my meetings were in the space. I'm going to work on that in 2014.

Hi Rich,

Working from home for the past 5 years, and even when "the office" was just down the street, never went there....
The online world does make for an interesting set of workplace adjustments.

Happy Holidays and a Pfanntastic 2014

John Pusa, I think you're right, but for me the future is now.

Peter, When I used to have a brick and mortar office spending time there was wasteful anyway. Too many water cooler conversations and questions from rookies, etc.

I am computer savy, but not security savy. However, my clients are and some restrict my access to certain browsers. For those the cloud is not acceptable.

David, I've had clients who are more concerned than most with online security, but that really doesn't come into play much with the cloud office. The cloud office is a meeting space where brokers meet for training and to meet with staff when needed. You can meet clients there too, but I usually meet mine at their houses if it's a listing or at the local Starbucks if they are a buyer. Social security numbers and other confidential client information is not displayed or stored there, so unless there is something I'm not considering I think any security risk is minimal.

It's always nice to see what other tech-savvy real estate professionals are doing and how they utilize technology. Thanks for providing such a thorough explanation of what you do.
