Even with the average retirement age rising (Americans can retire from 62-70 years of age getting max social security benefits from 65-67 years of age) the U.S. life expectancy has grown to 78.7 years; with modern medicine improving every day the quality of life we experience as American seniors is promising. This sparks the question what are some things to do when you retire. Some of the obvious answers to this question are travel, babysit, or taking up RVing but I challenge you to think outside the box...
When thinking about things to do when you retire why not consider starting your own business?? Some great ideas could be opening a bed and breakfast or buying a franchise. How about becoming a consultant in your job field? After all you have spent years in the field so you are sure to have picked up some use full advice to pass out to a younger generation. Teachers could always consider a tutoring business and if you love children you can always open a day care.
When you were young you dreamed of playing on a professional sports team or competing for Team USA in the Olympics so now that you have some extra time on your hands why not relive those childhood dreams. When considering things to do when you retire why not consider joining a sports team or compete in senior sporting events? You can rally some active 55 and over friends and compete in a softball, volleyball, or basketball tournament or train extra hard and take part in the National Senior Games.
When contemplating things to do when you retire don't rule out continuing education. A great way to get out and socialize while developing an exercise routine for your brain is to enroll in a college class. Whether is is a non-credited course or a thesis class there is something for everyone when it comes to education. Many retires find it fun to see if they can keep up with their 20-something year old class mates! If you are concerned about the cost of college some schools offer tuition wavers for seniors or you can always audit a class to save money. Community colleges usually have the most reasonably priced classes and you can usually find one conveniently close to home.
