Now, what was your name again?

Now, what was your name again?

Well, it's confessional time, of sorts- or the closest my Baptist self will come to it, I suppose:  I am bad at remembering names... scratch that- I am really, really bad at remembering names.

I've heard it said that 80% of the times one is handed a pen to try out, they'll write their name.  No hard evidence to support that that I've seen, mind you (and I might argue that drawing a bunch of squiggly lines is near the top of the list, too), but I can see a the reasoning and all:  Names are important.

On the TV show Cheers, that bar was a place "where everybody knows your name"- a warm, welcoming sort of busines.  Who wouldn't like the folks at their favorite establishment calling out their name when they arrived?

On the other hand, Alan Jackson sang a song called "I Don't Even Know Your Name"- and his evening with a waitress named whatshername didn't turn out too well at all.

We've only got one name.  There may be others that have the same name, but our names belong to us- and deep down, they're pretty dang important to us.

Clients like it when you remember their name.  It sends a message that you're someone who values their business, and someone who generally cares about seeing to it that things turn out for the best.

That's why I came out with this here confessional.... I'm owning up to the pitiful name-recollectin' ways of my past and looking ahead to better name-recalling days ahead.

Now, what was your name again?

I take no shame in asking them for the correct spelling of their name after they introduce themselves to me.  Then I an writing it down and next thing you know, I cannot forget it.  Try it, it might work for you.  Of course you always need to carry a small notebook and working pen with you.  That should be the easy part.

Dennis, sounds like a fantastic resolution for the year-- names are indeed worth remembering.

Hi, Karen:  Thank you for dropping by, and for your comment.  I do try to write names down from time to time, but with the example above being some of my best penmanship, it's still a problem!

Hi, Ralph:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment.  I've done things in the past like putting first/last names together and trying to keep up with them that way, but it gets a little crazy sometimes.  Folks want to be referred to by their name, of course- but typically the first name alone is fine...

Dennis, I bumped into a lady the other day at the Fresh Market, she said, "Hi Fred how are YOU?"  and I am thinking, "Oh No!  Who is this lady?"

I replied that I am just fine, and after a moment her name popped into my head.  Whew!

Hi, Fred:  Thank you for dropping by, and for your comment.  That's pretty funny- and something that happens to me far too often.  It might come as a shocker to some folks- though I doubt TOO many, but I participate a great deal in classes I take, etc.  Consequently, folks are always coming up to me and saying they remember me from a class, etc.  Some I remember, some I can barely recall- definitely an area for improvement

The best way to remember somone's name is try to think of someone else with the same name and then associate that person with the person you are trying to remember.  Like for me you could think of Rob Lowe or Rob Reiner.

Hi, Rob Reiner:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment.  I'll have to try that...
