Last Friday and Saturday, I participated in a two-day art class at Crossroads Art Center in Richmond, VA. We studied and copied styles of four renowned artists: Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, David A. Leffel, Nell Blaine and Andrew Wyeth.
Often considered as one of the most talented artists residing in Richmond, Christaphora Robeers facilitated our class. It was my first time taking a class from her. Several of the students in our class mentioned that they've been taking classes from her for about a decade or longer. She certainly has quite a following!
If you've never tried an art class and have an interest in it, I encourage you to take one. Admittedly, I found this class to be somewhat exhausting because of the hours of concentration involved. (Our teacher encouraged any of us who were standing to sit on a stool when we became tired.) However, it also was interesting and fun to interact with the other students and see the various interpretations of the same work of art.
Below are a couple samples of art from the class.

Above is a student oil painting imitated from the style and art by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.

Above is a student's watercolor imitation of a work done by artist Nell Blaine.
Fortunately, our instructor allowed us to choose between painting in watercolor, oil or acrylic. Having that flexibility was great for us, as we all could express ourselves using our own paint preferences instead of being limited to one type of paint.
Do you have a talent you'd like to express and develop? Taking an art class or another kind of class is a great way to develop skills. We're more than our jobs, and I think having and expanding interests outside of work is a great idea for everyone!
