What makes a neighborhood in Benicia considered good?

What makes a neighborhood in Benicia considered good?  That is a subjective question which as an agent I turn it around with a question of what is "good" to you?

Examples of a good neighborhood to me are the following:

Today I got a call a neighbor who left me a message:  "Hi Mel, just calling to let you know we will be out of town for a few days, can you keep an eye on the house?" Yep, we sure can.

Today I got a call from another neighbor: "Larry can you pull the sheets off my plants and just put them on the front courtyard if you can?" See it has been freezing in Benicia, and Larry ( my retired husband) was able to take care of it.

This coming Friday our neighbor is having a party for all of the neighbors for the Holidays.  We do this every year, some years have we done a progressive dinner party.  We often need designated drivers of the booze wagon to get from house to house.

In a normal month we ask for help and neighbors ask for help, we help to keep an eye on unusual activities in the 'hood".

Last month: ring, ring  "Steve, can you come over and let Devil Dog out during the day" Sure can.  He knows the code to get in our house.

Last month: Larry was gone and our neighbor put the garbage cans out before I could. I loved that!

Last month: ring, ring "Can you let Gunner and Scout out during the day" Yep, Larry can..he is retired!

Last month: ring, ring (this is a sad one), crying young daughter calls at 8AM "I think our little dog died, she just keeled over eating! what do we do?" (The husband is working out of town). Larry goes over to get the dog, brings her to our house.  Yes, she has gone to heaven.  Larry proceeds to take the dog and family to the vet.

October- One of our neighbors had a courtyard built out front and we had a party to celebrate its completion.

Every September three families go camping at Manchester Beach for the Labor Day weekend. We have been doing this for over 8 years.

September: ring, ring "You neighbors not going camping can you throw the papers over the fence for us?"  Yep, sure they can.

September: ring, ring "Lynn's garage door is open and no cars are there!"  What a sight to see a neighbor running to jump over the laser line to get the door to shut.  We could not just go out the side door because they have an alarm system.

These are just a few descriptions of a what I consider a good neighborhood is in Benicia.  It is about knowing and trusting your neighbors to form a close knit community.  We are here for each other no matter what.

What makes a neighborhood considered good in Benicia?

What makes your neighborhood good?

And by the way...my neighbors do give great referrals!

You guys lock door, have security codes, alarms? HA. Imagine that. (Smile) Neighborhood is everything and sometimes your best neighbor is no neighbor and enjoying the space.

Andrew, You are so right!  That is why the question solicits different ideas! Just today my husband and I were discussing how wonderful it would be on land with no neighbors for miles.  I could do that too! For now we love our "hood" with all its closeness!

A good neighborhood is some place where they don't mow lawns at 7 AM or play G-L-O-R-I-A at top volume for a crowd singalong at midnight, and nobody runs over your cat.
