Montclair was originally purchased and developed as a small suburban neighborhood to the east of Denver in 1885. One of it's founding fathers was Baron Walter von Richthofen, the uncle of the famous WWI flying ace known as the Red Baron. Designed for the more affluent Denver crowd that did not like the four hundred bars of Denver, new homeowners were required to purchase lots twice the normal size and build at least 3 story homes made of brick or stone. Building plans required approval by town trustees and there were no saloons allowed.
