Northern Virginia is a great place to be for the holidays! With so many special events throughout the region, it can be tough to keep track of them all, let alone decide where to go. Let this guide help you in making this a memorable holiday season.
Old Town Alexandria reminds you of the magic of the season by having street entertainers performing for crowds along brightly decorated historic streets with several wonderful events adding some Christmas cheer to your holiday shopping. Hopefully you were able to make the Tree Lighting Ceremony that took place in the Historic Market Square on Friday, November 29. If you missed that, fear not; this weekend, December 14-15, take a candlelight tour of one of four historic sights festively decorated in Old Town, or head to the Fort Ward Museum on Saturday, December 14 from noon until 4:00 pm for Christmas in Camp, a collection of exhibits about Christmas during the Civil War. Suggested donations are $2 per adult or $1 per child.
There’s plenty going on outside Alexandria as well. You could head to the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton for a children’s theater performance of “A Magical Christmas,” Saturdays at 1 pm through December 22, a perfect holiday play for all ages. Over at Bull Run Regional Park in Centreville through January 6 they have the Bull Run Festival of Lights, a light and music show that is a favorite in the region. Learn about holiday festivities during World War II with Christmas on the Home Front at Sully Historic Site in Chantilly. This Saturday, December 14 at 10 am and 1 pm, check out the Nutcracker Tea at The Ritz-Carlton, Tysons Corner in McLean, a contemporary retelling of “The Nutcracker” ballet, complete with tea and treats, all put on by members of the Creative Dance Center of the Institute of Performing Arts for Youth.
