Supporting our local museum. I spent this past weekend with my niece and we took a trip to The Haggin Museum, which is the local museum in Stockton, California. The Haggin Museum sits in the middle of the city on the premises of the beautiful Victory Park for 82 years. I was struck by the beauty of this brick building that is grand and gorgeous on the inside. This museum has a rich history and located in an established neighborhood with historical homes.
We spent over 2 hours in the museum reading and learning about the history of Stockton, which includes and extensive exhibit on Native Americans. In addition to the permanent exhibits the museum had two temporary exhibits that they were showcasing: Black Wings, American Dreams of Flight and Driven to Dream, Stockton’s Car Culture. We thoroughly enjoyed both exhibits.
Black Wings: American Dreams of Flight. I was particularly excited to experience this exhibit with my niece. Any chance I get to teach her about African American History...I take it. This exhibit was presented by the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. We loved the displays! The American Dreams of Flight was about the history African American Aviators. It illustrated their barriers and accomplishments. She learned more about: Bessie Coleman, the First African American female pilot; Mae Jemison, an American physician and NASA astronaut. She was also the first African American female to travel in space; Tuskegee Airman, a group of African Americans who fought in World War II. We left the museum a more knowledgeable and smiling with pride. This exhibit was up until January 12, 2013. If you are in the area, stop by and enjoy learning about African American Aviators they played a huge part of our American History.
The Haggin Museum has FREE Admission on the first saturday of each month, but if you live in Stockton you can support the museum by not only attending but purchase an annual membership. Free admission, among other benefits are included in the annual membership.
