Snow hits metro Detroit area, should I show homes today?

The first snow storm of the year and I had an a couple appointments yesterday that i had to reschedule.  Two of my clients were fine with it and the third had called me to cancel.  I know some agents don't mind going out in the snow and neither do their clients, I am one of them in fact.  But there are some reasons to reschedule and those reasons are pretty good.

bad weather

On one of the appointments I was to go on, we were looking at a private owned home that was vacant.  Not to mention my clients do not live in the area and would have to travel a distance in horrible driving conditions but i was also sure the driveway and walkways at the house would not be cleared.  I did not want my clients to be put in a position to cause harm to themselves either while driving or a slip and fall at the home.  Nor did I want to cause a situation of liability to the owners of the home or their listing agent for not having the walkways cleared for showings.  Yes, I could have grabbed a shovel and some salt and went there a little early and cleared the areas myself, but it was still snowing hard and say I did clear it up and new snow fell before my clients arrived,  now I opened myself up to that same liability.

One thing I know for sure about yesterday, not one of my clients were put in harms way because of me.  I  am sure if I had called my clients up and said I was still going to show the homes to them they would have went.  If  just out of not wanting to disappoint  me or out of a perceived obligation of "well if he's willing then we should go too".

My point is sometimes rescheduling is in your clients best interest....

While we don't have to deal with snow here in Jacksonville Beach, FL - you are correct, sometimes it's just better to reschedule.

Safety issue, terrible is someone slipped, fell and got hurt, better to play it smart.

I have been thinking about what agents must be going through in the nasty weather.  In my own case, it is actually more pleasant to show homes during the winter months than the summer months.  Be careful out there and have a wonderful Holiday season!

Richard, it's better to be safe than sorry.  A few years ago, my husband (a broker with the company) accompanied me on a showing during a horrible storm, guess who fell and sprained his ankle?  No more showings during nasty weather with this team!
