WINTER planning for Maryland and Northern Virginia. The emergency, disaster season is HERE and it arrived early this year, 2013.

FAMILY DISASTER PLANNING

Maryland and Northern Virginia home owners rarely have to deal with disasters experienced by our friends in other parts of the U.S.; tornados that have leveled entire towns, floods that cause lasting damage from mold, forest and brush fires that some of our ActiveRain friends have had to flee.

The cold weather we've experienced so far this December is not normal.  Hopefully, spring will come early to make up for the additional heating costs so far this winter season.

The most threatening experience we've had in this area for many years was an unusual earthquake in August 2011.  Sure, I posted about it.  It was my first earthquake experience, all 4-5 seconds of it.

The thing I dread most would probably be the loss of electricity.  Thank goodness Loudoun County and VDOT has had a well executed plan ongoing for a couple of years to remove tree limbs or entire trees that post a threat to overhead wires.  Of course, that didn't stop Mother Nature from showing her strength when Hurricane Sandy came roaring through.  Even then, the damage to our area was negligible when compared to that in the north eastern states, NY, NJ, NH??

The photo above is of a home site two properties from my home.  Sandy came sweeping through that property and left mine untouched.

WHETHER THE POTENTIAL DAMAGE IS LARGE OR SMALL, WE CAN PREPARE.  One thing is for sure, winter season is here and anything can happen.

One lesson from unexpected visits from mother nature is that home owners and particularly home BUYERS, need a cash reserve.  I encourage home buyers to avoid commiting their last cash to purchasing a home.  Owning a home make the home owner and not the landlord responsible for any repairs caused by natural disasters.
