Quick Tip for Efficient Heating

By

As winter begins to bear down on us, everyone is looking for the best way to save money and keep energy costs down. One of the easier things you can do is clean the fins of your baseboard heating system.

When the thermostat calls for heat, the boiler turns on and the pump starts circulating the hot water through the baseboards.  As the copper pipe of the individual baseboard heat up, the heat gets transferred to the fins. This creates a draft by taking the cooler air from below the baseboard and heating it as it rises between the fins. This is why baseboards are always a few inches off the ground.

When the fins get clogged with dust or debris that process becomes less efficient and you don’t get the maximum amount of heat transfer.

As easy way to solve this is to take a spray bottle with water and put a pan underneath the baseboard. Just spraying water through the fins will clean most of it out and everything will drip into the tray underneath. You will notice the difference immediately and you’ll be heating your home more efficiently.

Anything related to energy efficiency is important in my books, I always wonder how much heat and enery is lost due to negligence. Many communities in Europe have community heating which utilizes much more efficient sources of heat such as geothermal and solar - would love to see more of these implementations made across North America as well.
