During December this past year, approximately 300 Menlo Park and Redwood City Residents joined me in contributing over 800 cans and packages of food to Second Harvest Food Bank.

Candy Canes for Cans began in 2011 when I learned that 1 in every 10 people of San Mateo County rely on food banks. Even though the economy has improved here over the past couple of years, this statistic has remained the same, and there are still many people in dire need of some help.
Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties was founded in 1974. On average, each month the charity supplies almost one quarter of a million people with food. Although we only collected cans, Second Harvest provides almost as much fresh produce as it does canned goods. The charity also promotes federal nutrition programs and teaches families about healthy food choice.
Second Harvest Food Bank collects donations year round at grocery stores and various public venues. Candy Canes for Cans makes donating even easier because residents don't have to go any further than their front porch to help provide food for the hungry!
A special thank you to all who contributed to Candy Canes For Cans, Second Harvest Food Bank and all the wonderful causes for helping those less fortunate in 2013!
