Blood Types

There are 4 types of blood – Group A, Group B, Group AB and Group O. The most common type is O positive and the least common is AB negative. Group O negative is a universal donor, and can give to everybody. Group AB positive is a universal recipient however they cannot give to others except Group AB.

Blood Donation Process

1.     Your complete honesty in answering all questions is very important for the safety of patients who receive your blood. ( All information you provide is confidential)

2.     Ask questions about your health & sexual contact - the risk for hepatitis, HIV or AIDS, travel and medicines.(Under Florida Law it is a felony to donate blood if you know you have the (HIV) AIDS virus)

3.     Take your blood pressure, temperature and pulse.

4.     Take a small blood sample to make sure you are not anemic

5.     If you able to donate, they will cleanse your arm with an antiseptic. Use a new sterile, disposable needle to collect your blood.

Donating Plasma Procedure Information

1.     Two instruments are used for collecting platelets by apheresis: the Trima uses a single arm procedure and the COBE Spectra uses a two-arm procedure.

2.     About four liters of blood are continuously removed and returned during the collection procedure.

3.     Your body quickly replaces the donated platelets because the normal life span of platelets in the body is very short.

4.     A needle is placed in either one arm or both arms for collecting platelets and returning the unused blood components.

5.     Saline (a mild salt solution) is used to keep the veins open while collecting and returning blood.

6.     The blood slowly passes through sterile tubing into a sterile collection chamber in the instrument where the blood is mixed with anticoagulant and the platelets are separated from the red cells and plasma.

7.     As the platelets are being collected, the red cells and plasma are mixed with saline and returned to your body.

8.     The process ordinarily takes about 1 to 1 ½ hours to collect enough platelets for an adequate patient dose.

Donating Blood (Red Cell) Procedure Information

1.     The automated red cell collection instrument is called the Haemonetics MCS+

2.     At the start of the process, a needle is placed in the donor’s arm, and both the collection and return of blood are done through the same needle.

3.     Saline (a mild salt solution) is used to keep the vein open when blood is not being collected or returned and is used to replace fluids.

4.     About one pint of blood is collected at a time. As the blood is collected, it is mixed with a special solution (anticoagulant) to prevent clotting.

5.     The blood passes through sterile tubing into a sterile collection chamber in the instrument where the red cells and plasma are separated.

6.     The remaining blood is mixed with saline and returned to the donor, and the process is repeated one more time,    a) During a red cell/plasma collection, one unit of red cells and a double unit of plasma are collected.   b) During a two unit red cell collection, two units of red cells are collected.

7.     The process ordinarily takes about 40 minutes.

Save Lives

The bloods collected are used for patients ranging from infants to trauma victims, cancer patients and those under- going surgery.  And it saves thousands of lives within our local medical facilities.

Come donating plasma, donating blood, save lives and Thank you!
