The Importance of Leaf Removal from Richmond Virginia Streets

This morning while walking our miniature rescue poodle Nathan, I noticed that the leaves in our neighborhood still need to be removed from the street.  Normally by this time of year, a municipal truck with a huge vacuum hose comes through to pick up leaves.  However, leaves have yet to be picked up this month, and it's just a little surprising to me that hasn't been done yet.

Although the City of Richmond does have a PDF of the leaf collection schedule to view online, that schedule is subject to change.  In fact, various changes already have been announced.  If you happen to live in the City of Richmond and have any questions, please contact your voting district's city council member.  My particular city council member is Parker C. Agelasto, and based on my personal experience he normally is very quick to respond to any questions from constituents.  Usually, I get a response from him within 24 hours from the time that an email or text on Facebook is sent.

In fact, a photo of an updated leaf removal schedule dated Dec. 20, 2013, recently posted on my council member's Facebook page showing a chart with a new cycle 1 schedule.  Typically, there are two cycles on the leaf removal schedule for the City of Richmond.  If you're a resident of the City of Richmond, my advice also is to check with your particular district council member for the latest information.

Based on my own observations, here are five examples of benefits from periodic leaf removal from Richmond Virginia residential streets:

1)  It helps make parking on the street easier.

2)  It can help prevent flooding by allowing a free flow of rainwater to

the storm drains and sewer system.

3)  Leaf removal helps streets appear more attractive.

4)  Those removed leaves often can be used in gardens as compost.

5)  Any large piles of leaves on the street that are obstacles to driving or

     parking are gone.

Tire tracks can be seen on some leaves as cars frequently are parked on the street.

Leaves in the streets can also make it more difficult to treat surfaces for ice and snow.

Thanks for your comments, Juan and Roy.  Fortunately, our city council members tend to be very responsive to their constituents!
