It's easy to overlook our own front door until it's actually time to sell a home. A fresh cleaning or the front door, trim, knob, hardware, lock, hinges and front steps or deck make a huge difference. A fresh coat of is great, but do check with your real estate agent on color first.

Hello, I'm Your Front Door- It's Nice To Meet You

If you’re about to put your home up for sale, I want you to open your front door right now; go ahead, don’t be afraid; take a good, hard look and while you’re looking, think about this. This is the first thing the buyers get to see of your home. They may even  stand there for 3-5 minutes while their agent is trying to get the lockbox open and the key out; and don’t think they don’t notice how it looks.

Will your front door pass the first-impression test?

Here’s what you need to really take note of:

Hello I'm Your Front Door-It's Nice to Meet You

  • Does it need painting? Front doors fade rapidly and a fresh coat of paint will do wonders so head out and buy some paint and a good brush to apply it.

  • If it doesn’t need painting, does it need a good cleaning?  Cobwebs, mold, and mildew seem to settle there.

  • While you’re checking the mold and mildew out, take a look at the weather-stripping around the door. If it’s cracked, or flaking-replace it. If it has mildew, clean it.

  • Look up at the cover over the door, are there spiders, cobwebs, or hornets nests there? Be sure to remove them.

  • If you have a sidelight or two, make that glass sparkle; if you have a curtain on the sidelights, wash it and rehang with a little more tension to make it snap to attention.

  • Make sure the door doesn’t creak when it’s being opened. There’s nothing worse than a creaking door to give the wrong impression. Remember the Addams Family.

  • Shine the hardware on the door, if it's all green and needs replacing, head to your local DIY and buy new ones; they aren't that expensive and will look great.

  • Sweep the area in front of the door, in fact, sweep the entire walk up to the door.

  • And, how about a new doormat too. (Thanks, Tom Arstingstall)

Remember, it’s the very first impression of how you keep your home: Make it a good one.

Another great re-blog! The first impression starts out front and that includes the door.

Good morning Michelle. Great choice for a re-blog. Wouldn't it be something if we could live like we were selling. Anyway, Happy New Year.
