Lights In Bloom At Marie Selby Botanical Gardens! Marie Selby Botancial Gardens is a Sarasota treasure worthy of a visit any time of year. However, each December for a limited number of nights the gardens are transformed into a tropical fantasy of lights - Lights In Bloom!
This year marked a full decade of this enchanting and spectacular display attracting between 750 to 1,000 visitors each evening. Lights In Bloom was open for viewing between 6PM to 9PM on December 20 - 23 and December 26 - 30.
Lights In Bloom is an important fundraiser for Selby Gardens, and also very complex. Dozens of volunteers begin putting the dispay together as early as October. Everything must be very carefully done so as not to damage any of the garden's lush foiliage.
"It's an important fundraiser for us," Marketing Director, Grace Carlson said. "It gives the community a chance to be introduced to the gardens in a new, fun way."
New this year is The Children's Rainforest Garden designed to inspire a lifelong interest and respect for the living world. Adding to the dreamlike atmosphere of Lights In Bloom were an assortment of garden fairies wondering the grounds, a somewhat foreboding tree guardian, a Wishing Tree and live music. A holiday favorite is the Christmas tree fashioned from 600 bromeiads and 3,000 lights on display in front of the Selby Mansion.
Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is just one more reason to live in Sarasota. If you missed it this year, there is alway next year for Lights In Bloom At Marie Selby Botanical Gardens!
