When Do All the Lights Go Out?

I was driving to one of my listings today in White Sulphur Springs and noticed there were still a lot of Christmas lights on.  So, I started wondering when do most people take their lights down.  It is so pretty seeing all the lights shining so bright and it would be nice to see this every day of the year and just not during Christmas.

While in the area I took some photos of The Greenbrier's lights and a house in Lewisburg....their lights are still on, as well as many others in town and in my neighborhood.  Are your lights still on? ...... Or, do you turn them off right after Christmas?

There is just something magical about Christmas lights and the thought of the lights going out is somewhat sad!  We usually turn our lights out after New Years. They are are taken down and stored until next November/December. When do you turn the Christmas lights out?

I think right through New Years Day makes the most sense, but I keep mine on through the month of January.  I've actually had a tree until 2/1 in past years.  Every year is different for me...right now I'm in no hurry to pack up the Christmas decor.

Rebecca, I too like it when the lights are on and yards and buildings look so festive!  I do believe that it is a personal preference as to when they come down.  I have heard a lot of people say New Year's Day is the day to do it.  I know others who can't get them down fast enough after Christmas.  I am not sure that there is an accepted etiquette on it.

Rebecca, in childhood New Year's Day was undecorate day.  After all was putting away till next year we had a left-over party with all the holiday treats, all the cookies, candies, etc.

Now it depends on our schedule.  This year I had Jacob, 7, help me un-decorate the tree on Monday.  He had fun organizing all my decorations.  Then I made his favorite lunch Mac & cheese.   Today I put away the Christmas dishes.

Rebecca, that is a good question about when do most take down their Christmas Lights. I always heard that 12 days after Christmas is when many will take down the lights and trees. The Mexican tradition according to my partner say's they leave theirs up 12 days after Christ birthday. Happy New Year.

My tree came down on New Years but typically I like it down two or three days after Christmas. I have noticed many homes in my neighborhood are still lit.

Hi Rebecca,  There are some neighborhoods that leave their light up all year.  They just don't turn them on until December.  There are a lot still up here.  I think most are just waiing for the weather to clear up, or get warmer, which ever comes first.

Some places keep them one into the first few weeks in January.  I suppose this year with all the cold, no one wants to mess with it.
