January 2014 Historic Homes E Newsletter From Carolyn Roland

Civil rights, slavery and Delaware in the 1940s to be featured at State of Delaware museums in January.Highlights include “Civil Rights: A Dream Deferred: The Past to the Present” at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan 4 at The Old State House (above)  located at 25 The Green in Dover. Presented by Dr. James Newton, University of Delaware professor emeritus of Black American Studies, the program will include a screening of the 2007 documentary film “A Dream Deferred: Remembering the 1968 Occupation” which depicts the rioting that took place in Wilmington, Del. after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the subsequent nine-month occupation of the city by the National Guard.  (Note: This was the year I moved to Wilmington and remember the National Guard patrolling the parking lot of Sears. The results of that year can be seen in the residential patterns of today)

Also on January 4, “Protest Music.” Guided tours examine the roots of protest music through original recordings played on authentic Victor Talking Machines. First Saturday in the First State program. Johnson Victrola Museum, 375 S. New St., Dover. 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m. 302-744-5055.

The Delaware Historical Society is going to celebrate its Sesquicentennial, 1864-2014 at 6 PM .on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at the historic (and recently converted for occupancy by a law firm) old “City-County Building,” or Historic Courthouse on Rodney Square, as it is now being called. An invitation can be found here for this event. (below, Delaware Historical Society and Old Town Hall)

THANKS to those who responded to my request in the last newsletter for possible historic home listings. As a result, we have one possible historic home for sale in the West Chester, Pennsylvania area, plus another Historic Home (below) where the owners are getting ready for showings. This one is an early 19th C. stone home on over 4 acres in Hockessin, Delaware. If you think you may have interest in the latter, please contact Carolyn Roland for details. (below, Hockessin home)

There is also a great opportunity for a late 18th C stone historic home for sale currently on the market on the line between the City of Wilmington and the County. It was the home of a miller on the Shellpot Creek, which leads down to the Brandywine Creek. Wilmington and Brandywine Hundred were home to numerous mills from the days of early settlement because of the availability of the many rushing creeks with the ability to turn the mill wheels and grind grain, saw wood, or later, to make paper.

And, lest you think social networking is something new, check out this new program for 4-6 graders at the New Castle Historical Society. Take tea with the Governor's wife, explore manners and the world of servants (clue:not Downton Abbey)  wander around town, learn to network the old fashioned way! (Below, New Castle Academy and Immanuel Church on the Green)
