How YOU can Help Your REALTOR®
Help You in Your Relocation!
Once you have chosen the person you want to help you finding a home in the new location, you are ready to get to work.
Here are some tips to help your REALTOR® be maximally effective so you can get to where you want to be in a timely, efficient manner.
Respond quickly when you get emails or calls from your REALTOR®. Delays in communication will make it more difficult for your REALTOR® to assist
If you need financing get pre-approved in writing early on
Verify the details of your relocation package, if applicable. Make sure your REALTOR® knows this is part of the process, and if s/he will be expected to pay a referral fee. There may be additional paperwork involved during the transaction
Be a good communicator and a good listener
Provide your REALTOR® with information needed promptly, especially when things change (e.g., your budget, dates)
Be clear about what you want and need in your new home and neighborhood, and what you are willing to trade off. Recognize this may shift over time, and with the realities of the market you are moving to, but the more your agent knows the better
Get as educated as you can about the new area, the inventory, what’s selling and for how much, and understand the local market conditions (buyer’s market, seller’s market, balanced market). Review daily emailed listings from the MLS. Let your REALTOR® know your likes and dislikes to better assist you. Your REALTOR® can probably preview homes and provide more photos and videos, or perhaps do Skype or Facetime to provide a virtual walk-through.
Obtain all the necessary contact information (email, cell phone, office phone) for your agent and provide the same.
Be flexible and change direction quickly if you need to, and inform your Realtor of any and all changes immediately.
Keep careful notes and records of all conversations, decisions, resolutions to problems, etc. Use email to confirm and clarify. Don’t make assumptions – confirm and re-confirm
Find out how the buying process works in the new city/state – it may be very different from what you are used to. What forms will you encounter? What is the timing? Who else is involved?
Do your due diligence. Use the Internet to help research the new community and get answers to your questions. Ask for resources from your REALTOR®
