Hawkins Clinic 1946 Searcy AR

We have done The Hawkins Clinic Hospital in Searcy AR several times in our blog.  It was located at the corner of Market Street and Grand Avenue  which is now a Harding University parking lot.  My favorite one was probably the one with two young Searcy girls that we know and love standing beside a convertible.

Remember when nurses wore white caps, white uniforms, white stockings, and drove convertibles? Hawkins Hospital in Searcy Arkansas.

Let's review that blog.  Old Hawkins Hospital nurses.

Roger Dobbins, our newest Sleuth, emailed this great picture of the old clinic and it appears to be almost new in this picture.  1940, says the postcard, and there has not been time for landscaping.  It's another great photo of historic Searcy AR.

Don, thanks the same card, isn't it?  I've written so many blogs that I can't keep up.  But I like letting you refresh my memory on the blogs.  My favorite is still Anita and that durned convertible!!

HAWKINS CLINIC HOSPITAL

Dr. M.C. Hawkins opened Hawkins Clinic Hospital in July of 1940. It was located on the corner of Center Street and the boulevard going in to Harding University. Eventually, Harding University bought this property, demolished the building, and turned the land into a parking lot.

Hawkins Clinic Hospital had 26 hospital beds. It also had a clinic, a surgery room, a delivery room, a littlenursery, and several examination rooms. Dr. Brown first learned of opportunities in Searcy when he was at the medical school of the Universityof Tennessee.

"I saw a note on the bulletin board saying that

Dr. Hawkins wanted a doctor to come and join him. I had lived in Searcy a year, and a small town appealed to my wife and me. I came over and talked to him, andwe worked out a deal where I would come and workwith him," Dr. Brown said.

Dr. Brown said he learned a lot about medicine from Dr. Hawkins. "He was an excellent general surgeon for his time. And he was a person who was honest and very concerned about patients always getting the best of care. He was a little abrasive at times, but if you knew him, you knew that his bark wasn't as loud as it sounded. But he was a good man and a good doctor. I gained a lot of experience working with him." Dr. Brown practiced with Dr. Hawkins until he was called back to active duty in the military. While he was gone, Dr. Formby came to Searcy and joined Dr. Hawkins. So when Dr. C.W. Jackson came to Judsonia in 1955,

Searcy had two hospitals and eight physicians. At Dr. Hugh Edwards were the two practicing physicians. Dr. Hawkins, Dr. A.R. Brown, Dr. Tom Formby, and Dr. Bill Davis worked at Hawkins Clinic Hospital.Dr. Jackson and Dr. Adair, who practiced in Bald Knob, used both hospitals.

"The two hospitals w e r e — I would say—not too friendly towards the staff of the other one. There was a lot of competition," Dr. Jackson said. "Both of them treated me very very well, and both doctors allowed me on their staffs. I let my patients decide as to which hospital they wanted to go to. And I got along fine with both hospitals.

There was no problem with them from my standpoint." Dr. M.C. Hawkins announced June 12,1963, that he was closing the hospital division of the Hawkins Clinic Hospital at the end of that month. The clinic was to remain in operation where Dr. Hawkins planned to continue his practice of surgery, gynecology, and diagnosis. Patients were to be transferred to the Rodgers Hospital after June 30.

"When Dr. Hawkins closed his hospital, we really began to feel the necessity of having better hospital facilities,"Dr. Brown said. Dr. Martin C. Hawkins opened Hawkins Clinic Hospital in July of 1940. "We called him 'Hawk,'" Dr. Jack Gardner said.

Don, thanks again!  That is information that I have never seen before and very good history.  So the postcard really was made when the clinic was new.  I have been here in Searcy long enough to remember most of those doctors.  They were loved!

Barbara, this information was in the book you gave me years ago. It was the 40th anniversity of the White County Medical Center 1967 - 2007 publication. I suspect it was 2007 when you gave Paula and me the book. Probably it was more for Paula.

The picture of Betty Robbins and Maureen Twyford standing by Anita's car and the Hawkins sign is also in the book.

Don, you are so full of information.  That book being in my hands has been totally wiped out of my memory but I am glad you and Paula enjoyed it and still have it. I thought Anita gave me the pictures of the ladies.  Were they all in the book?

Anita, I wish I had Don's memory skills!  So do you, probably.

Matthew, I am glad you found this blog and like it.  The history in Searcy is so interesting when it is told by Super Sleuth commenters like the ones on this blog, Don Thompson and Anita Fuller especially.  I believe your dad would be Marty Hawkins?  He would be a treasure trove of history.  Also his friend Benson Robbins knows so much.  Wish they were blog contributors.

Peggy, this is the old blog but there is another one with the nurses Betty and Anita.  If you are reading the one above and see letters in blue click on those letters and they will bring up another blog.  Have fun!

Matt, thanks for forwarding that blog to your mother.  I agree that it was a great party.  If you don't find the post let me know.  If you search google with something like Robbins Sanford it will probably pop up.  Benson and Betty always had the best parties.  I tease them now each time I see them about needing to have another one!

Joan, thanks for your comment.  If you'd like, tell us all about how he told about his Indian heritage.  I don't believe I have heard about that before.  Put it on a comment and it will go to lots of readers!
