Your mailbox says a lot about your home. I do not say this or take this subject lightly. As a realtor I factor in a home's mailbox into their curb appeal. It also tells me whether or not the house itself is treated in the same way.
I have to wonder aloud about how difficult it is to maintain your mailbox. Just give it a wash every now and then and a fresh coat of paint when it starts chipping. If it is hit and destroyed then spend the money and replace it for crying out loud.
I cannot tell you how many people try to piece meal their mailboxes back together like humpty dumpty when it gets hit by a car, or bat for that matter. I even had a neighbor stick his box on top of a cardboard box when his got hit. This mailbox to the right is what all the mailboxes in Pembroke Falls should look like, for instance. The above are against the norm.
And yes, in a gated community where you spend lots of money for conformity and maintenance all of the mailboxes should match. If you want a fancy football mailbox then an HOA is probably not for you. I have found in all my years in the business that when I pull up to a house and the mailbox is trashed, so is the house. Keep in mind that something so small can make a big difference in the presentation of your home, so take some pride in it.
