Text Messaging Success

New Years I kicked back and really enjoyed doing whatever I wanted to do.  My head was in the clouds  playing on the computer, gazing at my grandson and enjoying the outdoors.  My phone was dead and I needed to make a bunch of phone calls but I didn't feel like it...so I didn't.

Once the phone was charged enough, I decided to text it instead.  I got this brilliant idea to text everyone separately rather than a group text.  Conversations sometimes arise that maybe you don't want to hear, I had an incident last week with a group text message besides I wanted to run a little experiment. So I text each person one by one. It only took an hour...I would never been able to make that many calls..NO way..no how...

Phone Call Responses Vs. Text Message Responses

New Years Day was probably an easy day for most folks.  Relaxing, recovering, resolutinating, reflecting.  I don't know about you I had no desire to talk on the phone with anyone.  I'm sure I was not alone. Some folks still celebrating and some folks relaxing at home.

Making phone calls regardless of how close you are with someone, at times they either can't, won't or do not want to pick up the phone.  I know my young nieces might not have picked up nor my bartending son.  Those friends of mine who partied hearty I probably wouldn't get them either. Instead I would have had to leave a message and a text.  Nope it didn't appeal to me either..

So I just sent individual texts. Short sweet and to the point...and here is what happened....

Out of 48 telephone numbers I had sent texts, all but two people text me back and 35 text me almost immediately. 11 responded to my text the next day. 2 people did not respond back and probably never will. lol  I had lengthier text conversations with 5 people.  One of the 5 inquired about the steps to take to buy a home.  I love when that happens!

Sending Well Wishes A Future Referral Will Happen Down The Road

Here is the point....many time as professionals we contact people based on how we want to communicate..truth is you will have a much better response if you communicate in the way your customers or future customers want to communicate.  Do I like to text? No not really but lets face facts....according to Pew Internet, 81% of people either recieve or send texts.  If you want to get into the conversation with people more often...I would be open to text.

Hi Midori, I have to say texting is a great strategy based off me and my SOI. I know how I operated prior to real estate if you called and I didn't want or couldn't talk, I would text you explain why I didn't answer your call and initiate the conversation that way. If more needed to be said I would tell you what time I would call. Here is something to experiment with though, some of us have the thought that texting can only happen from that little bitty phone. Not true. There are programs like Zipwhip, where you can text right from your computer via a download or web based. I think it keeps you focused in one place. I also think texting works with reaching the younger generation, having worked for several cell phone companies, the trend was they didn't use their voice minutes but had astronomical texting counts. My mother is 55 and she will not answer her phone but then respond with a text, so times are definitely changing considering she couldn't even operate a cell phone 2 years ago.

It took me awhile to get warm and fuzzy with texting but now I absolutely love it and have mastered the voice recognition so all mine go through almost perfect!  Change, sometimes you just have to do it!

I've text more in the last six months...and will be doing more. It is faster, and I seem to get more things done as I am not on the phone all day.

I didn't like to text, however, I started to text more because of voice text since my texting skills lacke speed and efficiency, so I agree with your perception completely.

Thanks for the post.  I would much rather text than phone.  I find it's more efficient as you tend to get to the point and stay on subject.  However, I have been reluctant to text to the majority of clients as I feel they may find it impersonal.  Your post gives me reason to revisit my thinking.

The ability to voice text has been a breakthru for me.  However, I'm very diligent to read every word before I hit the send button.  That little recorder will "act up" on days when it's too lazy to listen and write words that I can't even imagine where they came from....certainly not my mouth!

Frankly I love talking to Seri. My 5s is the best investment I've ever made and Seri has an answer for just about every question I ask. LOL!

Dear Midori,

Texts are useful, because you can sometimes get one off, while with someone else, if it is urgent to have a short communication. Great during classes that only have a break evey two hours or so too.

Texting is a wonderful way to keep in touch when other methods of communication are not optimal. While we love text messages, it's important to remember that relationships are made and maintained using all forms of communication.

I am curious--did you send them a short message wishing them a Happy New Year or was it something more intriguing?

That's awesome!  I think that is one of the reasons Facebook works so well too, you have to use the medium that people are using.  Just follow the people!

I agree on making the message about them or some memory you had together. I do this when I recieve Birthday wishes on Facebook. Instead of saying in a post "Thank you ALL for the Wishes," I respond to each post with a short thanks and great memory we shared.

Side Note: I have called people, and then texted after the phone call and they always usually respond to the text first!

This is a good idea and I think I will send more text out when marketing.  Personal text, and I think I will get a good response.

Your responses just proved what most of us know - that texting is immediate and will ususally garner a quicker response.  Nothing beats a personal touch but often you just don't want to talk or don't have the time to talk and texting serves you better.
