The First Storm of 2014

By

Last night we got our first storm of the new year. There was sleet most of the day and then it snowed about 6-8 inches on top of that.  What's different, it is about 5-8 degrees below zero with the wind chill.  As a result the snow is like powder, you could blow it with a leaf blower.  Usually when we get snow it is wet and very heavy as it warms up right before the storm or during.

Due to the weather New York and New Jersey are in a state of emergency and they have asked people to stay off the roads if possible.  Everyone stay safe and warm!

Nice to see that you have your emergency food supply . . . for the birdies!  We haven't have any snow in my neck of the woods.  I'm hoping for a real doozy!  I love the snow.

Yuk! That is what we typically get.  A layer of ice and then an inch or two of grainy snow. Makes for REALLY slick roads.

After many years of braving the elements in Troy, NY at Rensselaer and it's blustery, hilly campus, I am happy to be comfortable living in Paradise. Be safe during the storm and Happy New Year!

Debra, it did look like the East coast was getting hammered with snow and frigid temperatures.    That is what our snow is most all winter, fluffy.    Stay warm!

Debbie, that sounds like the kind of weather that's going on back in my home town of Woodstock, Illinois except we have a bit more snow and expecting more. Alabama is looking pretty good right now!

I do not miss that weather at all!

You might laugh since I live in Denver but honestly even when we get a monster snow storm its dry clear roads the next day and typically warm and sunny. Those eastern and midwest storms are nasty during and after. be warm and be safe

Debra, happened to be spending the holidays in Chicagoland and boy, we got tired of that snow and cold here. Soooooooooooo, we sent it your way. We got about 8 inches around O'Hare field. Did you hear that the Green Bay Packer/San Francisco game being played at Lambeau Field in Green Bay has predicted weather: 20 degrees below zero and 40 degrees below with wind chill. Green Bay is my hometown and let me tell you, the ICE BOWL played there a number of years ago was a-w-f-u-l-l-y COLD! Have lots of fun in the snow, NY!!

Debra, we are getting round two tonight and tomorrow with another 6-8 inches of snow and 30 mph winds so there will be lots of drifting!!!  The high on Monday will be -15 degrees below zero.   Hope this second round misses you!

It's been pretty cold here in NH too.   I never stepped outside once Mon.-Fri. this past week.  I was so lucky to be able to stay inside....sometimes not having any work is a good thing!  It was -6 today.

Happy New Year!  We got our first 7 inches here in Michigan and we're expecting another 8-10 tonight!  Temperatures are at their lowest since 2009.  We are in the low teens and single digits, our windchills are about 5 - 10 below.  This is a Winter Storm in Michigan, only 3 1/2 months to go before we can see daylight!  Closer to Spring.

Debra, we have been lucky so far with only an inch of snow.  But, I know we will be getting our share soon.  Stay warm and safe.

Debra, we already have about seven inches and the radar shows snow all the way back to central Missouri and the Arkansas border.  We are going to get another seven inches on top of that, and the winds are really starting to howl!  Stay warm and this one may miss you Debra as it is heading toward Buffalo and the St. Lawrence Valley.

Love the photo of your bird feeder with the suet feeder right there, too.  Stay warm.  It is so cold here that they closed the elementary and high schools for today.

Ron - They delayed the opening but the school buses are going around now.  I am surprised as the cold is just unreal.

Bruce - I just can't believe the weather you are having.  Take care and stay safe!

Rebecca -  The 8 inches we got the other day was washed away in the rain Saturday (most of it) but this 20 below zero has frozen anything and everything else.

Rosie - Hopefully it is too cold for us to get anymore snow but I think I would take it over these "frigid" temperatures.
