When did snow become a weapon of mass destruction?

Snow Covered Fishing Creek, Chesapeake Beach

In an effort to gain ratings, TV news has turned snow into something to be feared. (As a former news producer, I can’t tell you how many times I have sent camera crews and reporters to the end of the earth in search of snow…  all because we told everyone it was going to be bad.)

All day Thursday, I heard about the impending doom. The Weather Channel talked about Boston being at Snow-con 8, as if we were about to experience nuclear fall-out instead of snow! Yes Boston was being invaded by white powdery flakes but is that anything to be afraid of?

I remember growing up, I sat in front of the TV and wish the snow would come. A snowstorm meant snowball fights, snow ice cream and sledding… the big bonus? no school. Somewhere along the way I lost that joy. Is it because I have responsibilities or the fact in this fast pace world, I have forgotten to stop and enjoy the little things?

It wasn’t until I went to take my two golden retrievers out for their last bathroom break last night that I realized how much I had forgotten to enjoy life. I looked out with dread at the snow. My dogs looked out and saw a giant slushy playground.  They couldn’t wait to get outside and play in the snow. For the first time in a long time, I found myself giddy with the idea of playing in the snow. After several doggie snow angels and a few rounds of snowball fetch, I remembered what it was like to just have fun!

Michelle - I just turn it off.  I find out about the roads, the closing and go back to work.

I might not be producing newscasts anymore but I am still a news hound. One day I will get better at turning it all off.
