Aquidneck Island (Native American name: Pocasset), comprised of the city of Newport, and the towns of Middletown and Portsmouth, Rhode Island is the biggest island in Narragansett Bay. 

Aquidneck Island (Newport, Middletown, Portsmouth) fun facts include:

      Newport • The cost to go fly a kite at Brenton Point State Park's July festival.

                   • 160,000 volumes occupy the shelves in the Redwood Library & Athenaeum, the oldest lending library in the country.

                   • In 1762, the Touro Synagogue was built.  It is the oldest surviving synagogue in America.  In the mid-1880s, the Quaker caretaker allowed it to be used as a stop on the Underground Railroad.

                   • Newport has six "sister" cities around the world: Kinsale, Ireland; St. John, New Brunswick; Ponta Delgada, Portugal; Imperia, Italy; Sklathos, Greece and Shimoda, Japan.

    Middletown • Over 50 herb varieties are grown at the Prescott Farm Period Gardens, an authentic Colonial garden, run by the University of Rhode Island/Master Gardeners and the Newport Restoration Foundation.

                   • 85000718 is the National Register of Historic Places reference number of the Gardiner Pond Shell Midden, a shell heap containing prehistori shell fossils and other remains, useful for archeological research. 

                   • 1,700 lbs of trash was collected during a cleanup of town beaches in the aftermath of the 2012 Superstorm Sandy.

  Portsmouth • Ten miles of trails are available for hiking or horseback riding at Sakonnet Greenway.

                   • The cost to cross the new Sakonnet River Bridge spanning Portsmouth and Tiverton is $.10.

                   • Over 80 shaped boxwoods and other plants make up Green Animals Topiary Garden, the oldest and most northern topiary garden in the country.
