Aging in Place Resources Makes Homes More Livable
My friend Kaye Swain has some really good resources for aging in place projects. They are great in any home, not just for seniors. I don't think I have seen these particular ones before and they are good ones to do to upgrade your existing home at any time.
Happy New Year! I'm hoping y'all are having a grand and safe time. My senior mom and I are enjoying a peaceful quiet night - finishing old projects and starting new ones.
I've also been doing some research on various aging-in-place options and articles such as:
- Universal Design Angles You Haven't Seen - Did you know this was a concept that originated with the Johnson administration but has seen a rebirth as we baby boomers keep on aging?
- 4 easy-living, universal design tips for any home - Great ideas including one of my senior mom's faves - lever-style handles for door knobs.
- When caregiving goes digital, more Boomers and Seniors can age in place longer - like monitors, pendant alarms, and sensors.
- Tips for Keeping Safe at Home with Chemotherapy - I had no idea how extremely important it is that caregivers and patients understand the risks and hazards that household members may be exposed to when caring for an outpatient dealing with cancer.
- Great Aging-in-Place bathroom! Even if your senior parent isn't dealing with wheelchairs, it can be hard to get their legs over the side of a bathtub. This is so much easier, don't you think?
- Grab Bars - These are especially useful in the bathroom, as are many other grand options that are now available.
- As Seattle station, King5, points out, the world is bracing for a retirement crisis. One of the least expensive places to age is right in your very own home. If you are looking for a new house, even if you don't have any specific needs at the moment, think ahead to possible problems down the road - whether caregiving for elderly parents, helping with grandkids, or just health issues in general. Then add some vital items to your shopping list - like hallways wide enough for wheelchairs, at least one bedroom and bathroom (complete with a shower) on the main floor, etc.
Some interesting food for thought to start the New Year with a focus on aging in place postitively and creatively. Once again, HAPPY NEW YEAR!
