I am a big pet advocate and I was surprised to have never heard about this before. But then again I have never seen dogs with yellow ribbons so I am not sure that it is even in our area just yet. Check out the Yellow Dog Project.
The Yellow Dog Project - Watch For The Yellow Ribbons:What’s the Yellow Dog Project? It’s a global movement for dogs who maybe aren’t in the mood to get petted/fondled/coo-ed to or at by strangers. These are not necessarily aggressive dogs but may be dogs with fear, in pain, or haven’t had enough training yet.
They may be in training for service dog status, or be a service dog. Service dogs wear coats that carry a warning to not pet the animal which most people ignore or don’t see; the yellow or coat ribbon stands out.
The yellow ribbon or coat warns people to ask permission of the owner before going overboard on the dog greeting/petting.
This is something that makes you wonder “what took so long”. We have definitely turned into a dog worshiping society and so many people feel the need to engulf every dog they see: not always a good idea. To learn more about The Yellow Dog Project, click here.
Note: The yellow ribbon does not keep you from being sued and is not a substitute for a good training program for your dog.
All of us need to spread the meaning of the yellow ribbon, it could save many children and adults from painful bites.
