Winter Landscaping Ideas. Colorado has a long winters. According to National Weather Service climate data, in Colorado Springs, the average date of the first freeze is October 1. The average date of the last freeze is May 8. So we are looking at roughly 8 months of winter like weather conditions. I've decided that I'm not willing to settle for 8 months of a boring dead yard. So for the last two years, I've been searching for winter landscaping ideas that would be attractive year round.
I'll be sharing winter landscaping ideas every Monday for the next few months. It is possible to have an attractive yard in the winter even on the gray dreary days.

We will consider trees and fences and other "decor" in winter landscapes.

We will consider sidewalks and paths.

The landscapes will be from homes in the country and in town. One week, I may highlight the yards of old Victorians in downtown Colorado Springs. Another week, I may highlight log cabins tucked away in the woods. Yet another week, I'll highlight landscaping that looks great with newer traditional homes. I'll also share photographs of beautiful winter landscapes belonging to businesses, schools and parks.

In some cases, I'll share photographs of the gardens and landscapes in different seasons. For example, the pictures above and below were taken on the University of Colorado -Colorado Springs campus.

Whenever possible, I'll provide information on specific plants and grasses that work well in the Colorado Springs area and that are low maintenace. In other words, I'll highlight plants that are cold hardy, deer resistant, wind tolerant and that require minimal water.
Sincerely,
