Colorado Winter Landscaping Ideas #1

Winter Landscaping Ideas.    Colorado has a long winters.  According to  National Weather Service climate data, in Colorado Springs, the average date of the first freeze is  October 1.  The average date of the last freeze is May 8.   So we are looking at roughly 8 months of  winter like weather conditions.    I've decided that I'm not willing to settle for 8 months of a boring dead yard.  So for the last two years, I've been searching for winter landscaping ideas that would be attractive year round.

I'll be sharing winter landscaping ideas every Monday for the next few months.  It is possible to have an attractive yard in the winter even on the gray dreary days.

 Downtown Colorado Springs winter yards

We will consider trees and fences and other "decor"  in winter landscapes.

 Snow on Tree Branch

We will consider sidewalks and paths.

 brick path

The landscapes will be from homes in the country and in town.  One week, I may highlight the yards of old Victorians in downtown Colorado Springs.  Another week, I may highlight log cabins tucked away in the woods.  Yet another week, I'll highlight landscaping that looks great with newer traditional homes.  I'll also share photographs of beautiful winter landscapes belonging to businesses, schools and parks.

Garden Path on a frosty morning

In some cases, I'll share photographs of the gardens and landscapes in different seasons.  For example, the pictures above and below were taken on the University of Colorado -Colorado Springs campus.

Fall Garden

Whenever possible, I'll provide information on specific plants and grasses that work well in the Colorado Springs area and that are low maintenace.   In other words, I'll  highlight plants that are cold hardy, deer resistant, wind tolerant and that require minimal water.

Sincerely,

What a great idea and the landscaping will provide cover for local wildlife as well during the cold months.

Good Morning Sondra,

I always visualize winter landscape as dull and dreary. But with your creative infusion, winter should not be dreary after all.

I enjoyed the pictures by the way.

Best.

Great subject to post!  Fortunately we don't have to concern ourselves with this in SW Florida but most homeowners in other states do.

Hi Sondra!

Love these photos... as a newcomer to the Denver area I'm discovering what "winter" means here. I think the snow can be beautiful on the bare branches of shrubs and trees. For some reason it seems to stick very photogenically! Like your photo of the brick path and gate.

Nice work and look forward to your next in the series.

Hi Sondra. These are some lovely photos of winter in Colorado Springs. How well I know that you have 8 months of winter. I will never forget driving down from Denver to the Springs on a field training exercise in the month of May, and it started to snow. Being from Texas, I was certainly not prepared for that kind of cold training.

Looking forward to your series of winter landscaping ideas.

Sondra -  love the photos, and Colorado is beautiful any time of year, you might add that even though we have winter, we have sunshine in this state 300 days a year, I have been in the Denver area my entire life and I have golfed every day of the year (except Christmas, just because) and I have boated in early November, yes wake-boarded, in the water with no wet-suit, that being said there is nothing like a Colorado winter with beautiful snow-capped rocky mountains.

No snow here in L.A. (Lower Alabama), well maybe once every 10 years, but I enjoy the photos. And I'm GLAD that I don't live there....a visit every 10 years ago is nice (had Army Basic Training in Kentucky during one of THE coldest years ever....enuff snow for me!!).

Sondra, eight months is a long winter! One of the things I like about Dallas weather is that we have a few spring like days nearly every week during winter, which is generally January and February, with a few exceptions.

I simply can't imagine why or how many Americans live in areas with climate change being so radical. Southern Cal is great and Hawaii is best, yet what is it that captures the mind to live in a state like Colorado?

The Colorado Springs City Code section 6.12.106 defines "Winter Months" as September 1 through May 31. (9 months of winter)

Section 6.12.302 requires that heating systems must be capable of maintaining a temperature of 70F in all occupied rooms during "winter months".

Sadly, some bad neighbors and landlords provide colorful yards year round with junk vehicles, trash, furniture and dandelions in the yard.  They don't care about the nice landscaping next door.
