The good, the bad, and the inedible...

Real Estate Agent with Amerivest Realty

The start of a new year is always a good time to reevaluate things... and I've come to realize two very self-evident truths.

I rarely make true "New Year's Resolutions" but who doesn't try to at least take advantage of a fresh start by attempting to (in general...) be a better person.

So in a half-hearted attempt to not go out to eat EVERY SINGLE NIGHT.... Matt and I took a trip to the grocery store.  We have a little inside joke when others talk about grocery shopping; we'll look at each other and ask naively, "What is a grocery?"

Before we ventured out to acquire these "groceries," Matt sat down with a cookbook and I consulted my "Some Food I'll Probably Never Make" board on Pinterest.  Fast forward to the next few nights when Matt turns out delicious meal component after delicious meal component and I turn out Pinterest "fails".

Here's where the self-awareness part comes in:  They're not really Pinterest fails... I just really stink at cooking.  Unless Pillsbury Crescent Rolls are the crux of the recipe, I'm pretty much destined to just be playing with ingredients until we've determined it's time to throw them away.  (Although, I did do a decent job with a dessert in which I had to make (from scratch) dough resembling a crescent roll.)

So, that's Truth #1 that I'm trying to accept:  I am a lousy cook.

However, Truth #2 is that:  I kind of rock at my job.

Along with the whole 'fresh start' thing, our MLS does this resetting of sales history that I usually find to be rather depressing.  I work all year to build up those numbers only for them to revert to zero while I sit on the couch watching the big ball drop.

However, the fruits of my November/December labor are coming to fruition and I've started 2014 off with a bang.  Last year was a good year, too.  I finished the year in our Realtor board rankings as #43 out of 800 (or so) agents.  (I like to keep an eye on our "Top 100" list... just to be aware of what's going on around me:))

So, after my 4th closing so far this year... I pulled up the "Top 100" list and guess who was at the top!?!  It was me!  I've never been #1 on that list before... I don't think I've ever even been in the top 10 before.  But, here's the thing... as bad as it may sound - I don't really have any desire to be number one on that list.  (At least not for very long... which is good, because I probably won't stay there very long...)  My big-picture goals are much more focused on customer service, market knowledge (and insight), being a trusted resource and sounding board, and maintaining at least some semblance of work-life balance.

I guess the moral of the story is that I plan to continue to focus on my work - so we've got some extra cash to go out to eat next time I make raw "potato chips" and soupy, tasteless bruschetta.

Have you tried crock pot cooking. It is really easy and you just throw everything in at once and cook for 8 hours if you assemble in the morning or four hours if you assemble at lunch time. This way it will be done by supper time. Check it out. I bet you will rock at those recipes.
