Buying Smoke Detectors? I found a new, safer model for a good price!

As a real estate agent I purchase several smoke detectors.  I often purchase when I see them on sale at Costco. I was recently looking to purchase some for one of my listings when I came upon one that was almost $80.00. I was surprised to see such a high price for just one smoke detector.

Typically home sellers are looking for the least expensive choice when installing sometimes up to 4 units in a home.

Since this type of model was new to me I did some research and found that the Dual Sensor Ionization Photoelectric Smoke Detector was a newer and safer model. One unit could detect a smoldering fire and a fire with flames. To me this was a better choice but I was determined to find out if there was a less expensive solution.  I came across a First Alert Brand unit that was only $25.99.  It seemed to offer the same protection and the $80.00 model. Here are the details of the model that I found that will be using and suggesting to my clients and friends.

First Alert smoke alarms and detectors are designed to protect you and your family.

  • Utilizes both ionization and photoelectric
    smoke sensors for optimal performance
  • Intelligent sensing technology reduces nonemergency or nuisance alarms
  • Single Button Silence/Test mutes unwanted alarms
  • Operates on 2-AA batteries (included)
  • 10-Year Limited Warranty

Property inspectors will check that smoke alarms are installed and working on every floor of a structure. According to the National Fire Protection Association, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths occur on properties where there are no smoke alarms, or the alarms aren’t maintained and working properly.

Professional fire associations also recommend that for the best protection, places where people sleep should be equipped with both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms or dual sensor smoke alarms which include both types of sensors. Ionization sensors are generally better at detecting flaming fires, while photoelectric smoke detection is more responsive in cases where the fire may smolder and produce more smoke.

I was happy to find out about this life saving product and wanted to share with you. Thanks for reading and don't forget to check your smoke detector batteries!

It is very important to have fire alarms installed in homes no matter the expense. Thanks for sharing a newer, safer model that is very reasonably priced.

Buying and installing smoke alarms and CMDs is important for any household. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), there were more than 358,500 home fires per year from 2011-2015.
