Business Development Tentacles - Not Calamari

By

I have been in sales for...well let's just say a long time. It never ceases to amaze me where business can come from in today's world. With people getting bombarded by information at all hours of the day through so any different mediums, it is a wonder anyone of our messages gets through to our potential clients. That is why it is so important to have as many business development tentacles in the water to help you grow your business.

What is a Business Development Tentacle?

In order to get a better understanding of this I want you to think of a squid or an octopus. These cephalopods have arms and on each of these arms are tentacles. These animals use their arms and tentacles in conjunction to move, run away, attract, gather and capture its prey. In your business I am sure you have multiple arms and it is important to have these business development tentacles as well. The arms of your business include things like marketing programs, blogs, Facebook pages, Goggle+ profiles, video channel, website, networking, and other manners in which you are trying to attract your clients.

For each one these arms you also have tentacles that adorn each of them. For example, marketing programs may include magnets, flyers, pop bys, and bumper stickers (don't laugh - check out this post be Debbie Gartner.) If
you are on AR then you are most likely blogging. Think of each one of your posts as another tentacle out there in the water waiting for the right client to read it and start working their way up to contact you. Your social media posts which I am sure have a different perspective of who you are and what you do are tentacles on another arm.

Increase Your Exposure, Increase Your Success

The next time you sit down and order up that calamari, I want you to think about what you are doing with your tentacles. Do you need to sharpen those little hooks on YOUR tentacles? There are alot of people out there looking for homes to buy and have homes to sell. They are all moving around our world. When they stop to investigate something don't you want your arms and tentacles in their path? Increase your business development efforts and you will increase your success.

For our consumers, please realize that many of our messages are there for your benefit. The next time you see a postcard, billboard, mailer, web advertisement or bumper sticker on someone's laptop, take a moment and see if the message rings true for you or if you walk away with a clear vision of what this person is trying to tell you. The help you receive from your nest Realtor could be the difference between success and failure. As my clients already know, when you work with me: Your Success is My Focus

You are so right, Jeff and you just never know where the leads will come from. If you are out there and consistently communicating, it increases your chances.  Thx for the mention on the laptop sticker and the link.

Hi Jeff, You are right that Debbie Gartner is a wonderful marketer. She is not afraid to try new ideas and to invest in things that work.

Jeff, I've often described the sales process as being like an octopus with many moving elements/arms that must be managed and monitored throughout the sales and escrow process.  Needless to say, I agree with your analogy with regard to marketing.

Jeff, I see your point. Easier said than done for some of us. I need to be working on all tentacles. Great analogy.

I'm a huge fan of tentatacles! And yes, one should always try new things. Not everybody is a reader, and at the same time, not everyone is fond of watching videos. The more medium you have the better chances you have of attracting customers.

Good morning Jeff. Are you saying the more exposure the better? Of course you are and you are so right. Blogging and social media allows me to stay well exposed.

Make it a great weekend!

What a long day yesterday and to get back on line and see these comments is a really nice feeling thank you all. I am flattered by the feature.

Debbie G. - you work hard at your marketing and deserve the acknowledgement. Thank you for your comments and sharing.

Debbie R - it is great to have people like Debbie sharing their skills and inspiring others.

Kathleen - as a veteran real estate broker you have a great understanding of the numerous parts and arms that are being coordinated to make a transaction work let alone getting clients on your side. Thank you for the feature in Bananatude.

Joan - the more tentacles the more chance you have to be seen. Thank you.

Laura - that is great to hear. When you start to know what works and what doesn't you are very far ahead of the game.

Pamela - you are correct. When you are first starting out you are just trying to grow arms and then you realize all the tentacles that you have to create too.

John - you said a lot in that one comment. People will gravitate to what makes them comfortable. That is why it is critical to cover a variety of mediums.

Joe - you know this very well and it shows every day. Thanks for your comment.

Jeff, your analogy is very related to this business. Maximum exposure has always been the key to a successful business.

I agree Jeff, we all need to fine tune the tentacles that bring consumers to us and send our message out.

Never underestimate the power of stickers.  My father has been an electrician for over 40 years.  Every house he goes into has his stickers on the electrical panel.  There are homes in the area where he can trace it back three owners before.  I do the same with my electrical business.
