Will it Rain in San Francisco Today?

Heart on Lyon Street stairsRain is finally likely in San Francisco. It's not here yet, but we're hopeful.

2013 was one of the driest years on record, and 2014 is starting out in a worrisome fashion. We have had no rain in many weeks. The air quality has been impacted. The water content in our minuscule snow pack in the Sierra Nevadas is low. Reservoirs throughout the state are at low levels, levels like 27% and 40% of normal. Municipalities are beginning to implement water-conserving measures (but that's the topic for another time.)

When wispy clouds started floating across the sky Friday afternoon, and I learned that rain is anticipated on today, I changed my late afternoon plans. I left my computer, laced up my running shoes, put the phone on silent mode, grabbed my car keys, and drove over to Lyon Street at Broadway.

My destination: a run down and up some hills in the Presidio, one of the City's treasures. Rarely do I get the car out when I'm in San Francisco, but today daylight was limited and I didn't have the time to walk the 1.5 miles across Pacific Heights and finish my trail run before dark.

Take a look at my starting and ending point. Beautiful, isn't it?

We're living our San Francisco Dream. Is the time right for you to do the same?

Hi, Lottie...I hope you do get some rain. I know what that is like...being in a drought. We have a lot of snow on Grand Mesa, but the moisture content is very low. I hope this changes as winter progresses into spring. Good luck to you.

What a simple and nice message on your video blog.  My kids gave me a video camera for Christmas... I need to open the box and get going.  I hope you get some rain - it's hard to believe that San Francisco would be low on it!

Lottie, That's a lovely area.  So peaceful ... which does make it a great place to get some dirt under one's feet.  I do hope it does rain today ... we need it!

Very beautiful Lottie.  San Farancisco is such a gorgeous city.  I still remember driving into San Francisco for the first time when I moved there 26 years ago next month and it was just pouring down rain.  Hopefully you will get a bit of that this year.

Debbie - sounds like we'll both be watching the skies, hoping for precipitation. Fingers crossed!

Cara, we've had unbelievably beautiful weather, which makes it nice to walk everywhere, which I do. But--we need rain here, snow in the Sierras, so we'll have water to drink, irrigate crops, and keep our gardens green.

Kathleen, I invite you to come tromp around the Presidio with me some day. I have several favorite meditation spots!

Scott, I suspect you'll have increased numbers of skiiers from California heading your Park City way this winter

I hope you receive the needed rain. We have a very rainy Saturday in Maryland and we have dreams of spring flowers.

It's pouring here on Long Island.  Surprisingly for this time of year, there were even a few unexpected claps of thunder.  Wishing you rain.

Love your video - and your ambition.

Lottie  I didn't know you were a runner.  I've run all my life and a hopeless addict!  I used to run marathons back in the 90's.  Now, I just run 4-6 miles 4-5 times a week.  Enjoy your day!

Lottie - We too have rain/slush turning to snow!  It's a great change from our sunny skies!  Great video!

Lottie, It's been far too dry in the greater San Francisco Bay Area.  Thank you for sharing your camera work!

Lottie, that does sound like you really could use some rain!   We have only had 14" of snow, and WAY below the normal too.   Could be tough this coming summer.   Hope you enjoyed your run!

Roy, we love your flower pictures so hope you have a banner year.

Geri, please send some of that rain here. Nothing much materialized yesterday.

John, I very rarely run anymore. My knees don't like it, but the rest of me needs it. I celebrated turning 60 by running my first marathon that year.

Laura, let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

Rebecca, yesterday was a rain disappointment day, that is for sure

Joan, that's what we're concerned about to, this coming summer.

Looks like a gorgeous day you had Lottie.  Prior to moving here the only other time I was in California was last winter - I think in the 2 weeks I was here then, I saw more rain than I have since moving here in July.  On a bright note, rain is now welcome, whereas on the east coast we couldn't wait for a sunny day!

John, we're quite disappointed; a few drizzles--not much more than a mist--fell Saturday; yesterday and today the skies were brilliant blue. Great for being outdoors in short sleeves, but it doesn't bode well for our need for water in the summer.
