100 Amp Electrical Service May not be Enough in Cos Cob, CT 06807

In Cos Cob, CT and other parts of Fairfield County, CT, a 100 amp electrical service is not enough to keep up with the demand of the average house.  Over the last several decades, the power requirements of homes in the area have significantly increased.  It is said that the average kitchen draws more electricity than the whole house if it was build over 30 years ago.

One of the causes of this surge in the demand for electricity is the proliferation of central air conditioning in houses.  Air conditioning, by its very nature, is an inefficient process, so your AC requires a lot of electricity to operate.  In some cases, central air conditioning can be installed in a house with a 100 amp service, but it depends on the size of the house and the additional loads. In most situations, however, it is recommended that the owner upgrade the electrical service to 200 amps.

Another reason a 100 amp service is not enough is because of the number of electronic devices in homes in Cos Cob.  Thirty years ago, people only had a handful of electronic devices in their homes. A typical house of that era might have a TV, a VCR, an answering machine (remember those?) a stereo, and a few appliances around the house.  Homes today are flooded with electronic devices from cell phones, flat screen TV’s, tablets, DVR’s, etc. All of those electronic devices draw electricity, which increases the demand on the home’s electrical system.  As people acquire more electronic devices, they need more outlets to plug them into, and more circuits for those outlets.

As an electrician, I upgrade homes to 200 amps all the time.  It is a relatively simple process that takes a day or two to complete and adds value to the home. A 200 amp service is the most common size in this area, and it is something that home buyers frequently look for when purchasing a home because it allows for future expansion.   If the 100 amp electrical service in Cos Cob, CT is not sufficient, please contact a licensed electrician in the area.

John, throughout the state, 200 amp power panels are getting to be more the standard than the exception. Having power capabilities to isolate rooms and devices is a safe way to go.

Ed, once Connecticut adopts the next code book, 100 amp main panels will not be allowed in a single family dwellings.  200 amps are most common, but 400 and 600 amp services are becoing more popular as well.
