Your Juicer May Be Broken

It is quite common in comments on AR to see members being more concerned with interaction with Google, than with their interaction with live people, other members, customers…

We know that Google is constantly trying to replicate human behavior, to emulate our way of reading, judging, so that they can be relevant to people. However, when people are constantly trying to replicate Google, it is sort of like moving backwards, isn't it?

If Google is focusing on the content most, and is trying to figure the closest to human eye and brain way to valuate the content, why are we trying to learn spider's language, and figure out how to do what Google is working on changing? Why spend time mastering what they will drop if they haven’t already?

If we did not know what they are trying to do, then fine, but we are not in the dark. We know where they are going, so why not stay where they are going? Producing great content that Google is after?

After all, these recommendations to repeat a keyword 3 times, and knock on the head/wood 4 times are pretty worthless. Because the minute too many people will have 3 keywords, and 4 knocks on the head/wood, Google will change the algorithm and punish those who are doing it. They may be changing the algorithm as we speak...

But Google will never punish for good and relevant content.

OK, Google brings us the lead, and one beautiful morning the phone rings. Is it the point where "happily thereafter" starts? Or this call is not the end, it is just the beginning? They called you, so what? That's where the real work starts. Will you ask Google for help?

Google is a sacred cow, so I will not be surprised if I am told that without Google juice we are all DOA. I believe that even if there is such thing as Google juice, the main component of it is good relevant content. You can't make Google juice from nothing. No matter how many times we use a particular keyword or knock on the head/wood... 

Yet in discussions and comments (and in challenges) it is all about Google Juice and not the content.

Hey, your juicer may be broken...

P.S. In child development we all go through the phase when we speak this infant’s language. Usually it passes quickly. For some reason this infant-googling language is so loved by our members, that it resembles the child development in reverse. Actually, babies are doing fine. It is us, who are in reverse…

Jason - funny, but I believe they will eventually find the way to measure the level of sincerity. Like a polygraph machine, but without a machine. Like they will treach the spider to understand that "Mortgage Rate in June in XYZ Village" as an SEO thing and punish for that.

Funny, but 20 years ago if you would read a title like that, you would probably say that the author is a moron, as the rate is not specific to the village, but now we are used to using geographic names with everything, which is a big bow to SEO... and eventually might be a punishable event for Google.

Jill - sometimes I am stunned by elaborate scams and I think that if these people with exceptional talent would have applied it for the good, they might be on Forbes list of rich people. But they would end up on a Police list, if not in jail.

Here I see so much effort to outsmart Google, that have this effort put in creating good content, they could have excel in what they are doing.

If you write about what you know (and I hate to say this but keywords are very important), then Google will index you. But you are correct that when the pedal meets the metal, there better be something substantial for the consumer. The company I wrote for, About.com, spends a fortune in SEO analyzation and optimization, but bottom line, the content had better be good.

Jon, this was the best post I have seen on AR since I have been here....and that has been a lot of years!!! You are so right on AR and the "faves of AR" depending on what year what month all preach about Google Juice...what will Google do...blah blah blah. It is all about the clients and what you  provide them. If you really listen to Matt C. from Google he always states write good information and you will be fine....hence with that note I am confident you Jon will be fine! on a side note this should be Inman worthy if I ever saw a post!!!!!, Endre

Endre - I believe that there are basics and then there are things that might be good but they are not basics. I believe, that basics come first. in Blogging it is content. Not the quantiry, but content. Then consistency...

AR promotes quantity, and quayntity, and again quantity. And then you read the advice by Members not to think about what to write, just plunge, and hope it will eventually come.

In what other profession would we suggest that people do, and, probably, learn as they go. Maybe in medical field? Why learn, why know... take the scalpel and plunge. you will figure it out later. It will come...

What good will ever come from not thinking?
