Home inspection in Carlsbad New Mexico. Is the dryer drying anything?

This issue is almost becoming the norm for home inspections in Carlsbad New Mexico.

Not that the dryer is not drying the clothes the owners wants to get dried, but the way the venting has been ran into the attic. This dryer vent has been this way since day one.

Home built in 1980. 1,700 SQFT. Dryer is located in the garage.

Many home owners don't have a clue as to where their dryer vent goes to unless it is the simplest install with the vent going out the exterior wall to a proper dryer vent hood.

When ever the vent is ran into the attic, this is a recipe for a potentially disastrous situation. One small sparks and the entire attic would have been engulfed in fire. Here is what I found when inspecting this home.

Dryer vented to attic.

This is actually the vent coming out of the blown in cellulose. There is about Two inches of lint and pet hair in the attic areas around the vent.

Lint covered access panel.

This access door or panel to the attic is covered with lint.

This makes for a really messy inspection of the attic areas when inspecting the home for the buyers.

Not to mention all the moisture being thrown into the attic warping the rafters and decking.

There is a number of issues that could cause a dryer to stop drying. A plugged vent is a big one that could end up causing a fire.

This should never be an issue at all. These vents need to be correct, but many installers never pay attention to what they are doing.

Vents can and do run everywhere. The best is to run them out the outside wall right behind the dryer. But when the dryer is on the inside walls of a home. The vent needs to go up buy still needs to go out of the home.

I had mentioned to the buyer before I even opened the attic area that the vent goes into the attic. Then I showed them the access door with all the lint on it. They shook their heads and said "Now there is a major issue". Yep.

Great post Clint and Vegas Bob can relate but in a different case ... I live with a large Burmese family and coming from another country when they first arrive in America they don't know how to use washers, dryers, etc. In fact when we first moved into a new home we had a gas dryer and it was 3-4 days before the gas was turned on in the home. The Burmese kept asking Vegas Bob why their clothes weren't drying ... "Go Figure"
