Real Estate Porn, horror movies and mysteries

While scrolling through my MAR (Maryland Association of REALTORS) newsletter today one headline caught my eye: Top 10 Tips For Making Great Real Estate Porn (by Amy Zimmer)

I was intrigued as I have never said the words Real Estate and porn in one sentence. At least I don't think so since the latter is not really part of my daily vocabulary to begin with.

What did you think Real Estate Porn is all about?

Pictures sell housesIt's all about the pictures. The star of the 'porn' is the listing of course. The pictures are the scenes and should be shot in such a way that the viewer wants to see more. Gorgeous. Great lighting. Pleasing to the eye.

Ms. Zimmer has a great point of course although I prefer a different term, Romance perhaps. After all, Real Estate is more like a love affair. I'm not just a REALTOR®, I'm a matchmaker. I find the perfect home for my buyer or the right buyer for my listing.

But no matter what you call it, marketing is key. The description and pictures should highlight the assets and make the viewer/reader want to find out more. That's the goal. We succeed when our phone is ringing and showing appointments are scheduled.

That's not likely to happen when the listing pictures are blurry, show off a cluttered counter or prominently feature a toilet, seat up of course. That's more like a horror movie than a porn. We also see quite a bit of mysteries, listings that don't have any pictures attached. I find that not many buyers are a fan of that genre.

Although it's highly unlikely that I will ever say "I make great Real Estate Porn" during a listing presentation, I do follow the script!

Thank you Margaret! I appreciate your comment.

You have a point there Tammy! I didn't even think of it.

Thank you VB!

I love a good romance Bridget and I love seeing my clients fall in love.

Thanks Mike! Glad it got your attention

Thank you Monica. I struggled a bit with the title and hesitated before clicking the submit button.

LOL Michael.

I agree Karen, that's a good point - it's a lot like online dating.

It was the first time I heard of the term, too, Pamela.

Congratulations Karen! You can always run them by your mentor/broker if you are not sure. Sometimes it helps to get someone else's input.

Ha, Richard! I can count on you to leave a very interesting comment. Good to see you!

I didn't coin the term Eric and pointed out that I would prefer Romance. According to the article great Real Estate photography is also known as Real Estate porn. It's the first time I heard it and used it.

I never thought of it like this before either Laura.

It was our MAR online newsletter Rich. I hope you didn't get too frustrated looking for the Realtor mag

Thank you very much Eric.

I have never heard it before Jason. I must be living a sheltered life

I would love to read the post Evelyn!

That's what they say Carla and according to Ms. Zimmer's article it really, really does.

I like the term eye candy Andrew, and it wouldn't raise any eyebrows during a listing presentation. Thanks for your great comment!

That's true Cindy. I blushed, too.

I've heard it said that sex sells in marketing.  I'd answer ... not with everyone.  I think maybe you'd alienate as many as you draw with the term.  I pass on it ... JMO ...

I much prefer your correction - romance. I don't care for the other at all.

I would probably hesitate to use the word in business but obviously it got the attention of quite a few here.

Yes, Andrea. I will agree that marketing is the Key, but I would use extreme caution on the wording. Romance or Matchmaking is a better phrase than Porn, even though the intentions may be good.

I agree with you Gene and that's why it's highly unlikely that I'll use the term. I'll stick with Romance and match-making.

Hi Jill, we want buyers to fall in love thus romance is the better word choice.

Hi Tammy, I have no intention of using the word in my business. I hoped to draw attention to the fact that such a word exists (I had no idea) which seems to be used commonly in NY to describe Real Estate photography (at least that's what I got from the article).

Loved your comment Laura! Isn't that exactly the reaction we hope to get?

Jerry, I hope I made it very clear in my post that it's unlikely that I'll use the word and that I prefer Romance over porn. I get their point however and thought it would make for an interesting discussion.

I had to quietly chuckle to myself while reading your title line.  What is it about our human nature that when we see words like "porn - sex - horror - murder, etc." we immediately click to see what it is all about. . .tsk, tsk!

Any real estate title with "porn" in it is going to catch the readers attention. But I agree romance will win the reader over.

So typical of advertising today.  The goal is not to sell based on the merits of the product or service.   The goal is to attract by the use of conflict.  I don't like negative advertising and that's all the use of the word porn is.

This is not, to my knowledge, a real estate term and likely to be blocked by many filters.

Andrea, great title.  I thought it was hilarious!  Never did I think I would see the words real estate, porn, horror and mysteries in one sentence!  But catchy title!  It is very true that real estate agents are more like matchmakers.  We match a person or family to a house that they love.  It's a beautiful thing and marketing helps us gets there!
