"Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value."
My favorite thing about this quote is it's brevity. So much is summed up in such a small phrase. I find Einstein's quote to be particularly important to the real estate industry, as we are each in charge of our own business and strive the be a success in what we do. The point is, often times we have the wrong goal in mind.
Unlike us, folks with full time 'jobs' have to worry when a company begins a round of layoffs, and the first people to go are usually those deemed expendable by the company - they weren't of enough value to keep. The term "linchpin" is used to describe those who are vital to a company's success - the people that provide too much value to possibly let go. In our business, we need to be linchpins, not to avoid layoffs, but to be financially successful.
What we should really focus on during our journey to the top is helping others - becoming a resource to our community, local professionals, networks, and our clientele. If you think about it, all of our tools, knowledge, and our work is designed to make ourselves a better resource to those around us. Our work should be dedicated to service above all else - to our clients & our communities, in a fashion that makes us a linchpin.
Whenever we are marketing, one of the thoughts that should repeat over & over in our heads is "What value am I bringing?". We are in the business of relationships, and if a relationship is too one-sided, it ends. Successful relationships are 2 sides coming together, offering value to make the other better - simply bringing something to the table and making yourself valuable should be the goal - when you offer real value, success will simply come to you.
