Steilacoom, Washington is a delightful little town located in the central portion of the Puget Sound. I love to drive through this charming city while on various errands. To get to Steilacoom from either direction (from Lakewood or JBLM / DuPont), you enjoy drive through towering trees that are gorgeous. Even in the middle of winter, many are still green. (Yet another reason for the state's nickname - the Evergreen State of Washington.) And whichever direction you arrive from, you end up enjoying a beautiful vista of water and islands.
This sweet city was featured by Coastal Living Magazine a few years ago with good reason. It's a lovely place to visit and a great city to live in.
Steilacoom is very proud that it can lay claim to several firsts including the fact that they are the first town incorporated in the State of Washington. The name is generally pronounced Still-a-cum and you can hear it pronounced by clicking here.
This historic town is no "flat-land" to quote my Minecraft-loving grandkids. It's built on a hilly area and the homes are often two stories to make good use of the hills. Steilacoom was one of the top choices on my house-hunting trip when I came but the only homes that were available at the time were two stories and not easily accessible for my senior mom. Or had sunken living rooms - a whole other issue. Neither of which gave us the aging-in-place options we needed to give her a safe home to live in. Which is not to say that none exist there. Just none at that time in our price bracket.
Typing that made me curious, though. So I headed over to Northwest MLS and did some research. Last year, there were 68 homes sold. Of those, there were two that were specifically listed as being "disabled access."
However, 30 that were sold were one story. Since I doubt most of those had sunken living rooms, I think it's safe to say there were some homes sold last year that would have worked for my senior mom as well as other seniors who prefer one story living as they are aging gracefully at home.
Time frame is from Jan 2013 to Dec 2013
So if you are househunting in the Dupont, Lakewood, JBLM, Steilacoom, University Place area of Pierce County, whether you need aging in place options or have other specific criteria, and if you like small town living near the waterfront, I would wholeheartedly recommend putting Steilacoom on your list. It's a grand place to visit AND to live in.
