It has been an amazing experience to join the Activerain community. The emphasis here is on the word, “community.” As a community, we respect each other and help share our knowledge. What really surprised me was the willingness of the members to reach out to and help a newbie like myself. The AR people that I have met in person have been very genuine and friendly, which seemed quite a contrast to other communities on the Internet.
With the availability of the Internet, consumers have access to more information than they could process in a lifetime. With so much information available, good quality local information becomes absolutely necessary in today’s world. As a third generation electrician, I have a plethora of industry specific knowledge, but before joining ActiveRain, I did not have a forum to share my knowledge. I had written blogs before, but most of those blog posts were seen my small numbers of people. So, this platform not only gave me a voice, but a local voice.
Another great concept about AR is the fostering of transparency among consumers about the industry. This is a very important idea for me. Everyday, I come across shoddy work done by people that were not electricians. It is an unfortunate reality of my profession. Part of the problem is that there are a lot of people doing bad quality work in homes. The other problem is that many people do not know how to choose a quality tradesman, or what questions to ask before a project starts. As a professional, I aim to fix that gap of knowledge that exists between the tradesman and the consumer.
We all have tons of specific knowledge about our respective industries, but the willingness to share it separates us from our competition and makes us experts. It is an honor a member of such a group elevating the standards our industries.
