Ask an Ambassador - Comments - What should and shouldn't I say?

Over the years there has been a lot of conversation about comments on ActiveRain. If newbies don't read the guidelines before they start commenting or posting they may make a few mistakes such as leaving links in their comment or simply saying 'Good Post". If you're wondering why you shouldn't leave links in a comments here's why - it's not your post - it's the authors post and you must get permission from the author to do so. I know it may be different on other platforms but that's the rule here on ActiveRain. As for simply logging in and leaving ten "Good Post" comments - Do I really need to say how lame that is. No I don't. But I will - stop it - it's lame on so many levels!

Digging a hole with negative comments

The type of comment that doesn't happen often but when it does -  makes my skin crawl. I know most of you can't imagine me getting all nuts about small stuff, and I don't. There is just this one small yet big comment mistake that I see on occasion and it baffles me.

People that leave negative comments about what the author is promoting
about their particular area, a local event or even worse a local partner

Why would you do that to the author?  I don't get it. Why would you pull positive steam away from the author and their local subject? It's not like they're asking for your personal feelings about the subject, business partner or area. And if they are it's an entirely different type of post and then say what you want, with a respective stance.  The localism post authors are simply promoting their area, an event or a business partner. They're writing to promote their area!  If you can't say something positive on localism posts just don't say anything. I'm sure you don't want somebody else leaving negative comments on your localism posts. And if you do you might want to re-think that strategy.....just saying.

Enough said - now let's get back to leaving more comments!

Wow.  That's all I can say.  I've really been rethinking AR and why I use it.  I thought I knew why but I guess I was wrong.  This will be the year I move my blog.

Commenters simply need to remind themselves that the blogger "owns" the post where people are leaving comments.  When you leave a comment, it's not your territory. You are a guest, and part of being a guest is to be courteous.

Hi Anna: Good Post!!!. Okay setting my joke aside, you said a great deal of sense because commenting good post or excellent post is almost synonymous to saying hello. I would not be surprised if the blog was not read at all by the commenter/commentator.

Jimmy most members are positive on ActiveRain.  And those guidelines are there for a reason - to guide and create a powerful impactful community - which has happened. They work!

Barbara neither do I. Maybe they're having a bad day and taking out their frustrations? I suggest a walk would be a better choice - even if it's cold out. Chill!

Ed there are a few I just move on as well as I don't want to get caught up in certain subjects, especially if it's negative.

Peter - ah yes Bambi!

Joan I find local post interesting and fun. It's a travel log for future trips!

Hella - oh there are still a few around thinking that works.

Jason - I don't see them often but I have just this week and it reminded me to lend a hand up to newbies or folks that have never read the guidelines.

Andrew reading the post is a good start! Leaving meaningful comments says a lot about the person over time.

Graziella - agreed! Keep it to yourself, especially on localism posts.

Anna, I do hate it when someone basically leaves an ad in their comment. It's not too often that a 'spam' comment gets through. But that's what the 'delete' button is for.

Anna, good reminder about the "good post" comment and not to leave links in a comment (very bad manners). I know what you're referring to because I have seen negative comments on localism posts from time to time. What someone is writing about in their local area most likely will not be to everyone's liking, so why spoil it for the blogger and their readers by leaving negative comments? I don't get that.

I had an issue with this a while back Anna.  I wrote a blog that was geared towards MY audience about the way I practice real estate.  Some yahoo got on there and criticized me and disagreed.  He had no point at all, other than to criticize.

Now, when I write blogs for my local crowd and potential clients, I disable comments.  They just aren't necessary.

Anna, thanks for the reminder. I have read some blogs where someone left a negative comment. As I remember the start up instructions, we are told we don't have to agree with everything that is posted. However, I believe we can make our view known in a polite way. I guess Constructive Criticism is the term I'm looking for.

I'm glad to have the Ambassadors around to help us.
