Facebook to lose 80% of users by 2017….updated...Facebook responds!

FacebookAll organisms in nature follow a clear path from birth to growth to maturity to old age and finally death.  Interestingly, businesses are no different.  The same graph that charts the numbers of bacteria in a colony over time-called a "bell curve"-is the same as a graph showing the lifespan of a company.

Facebook interest has peaked and the largest social network will lose 80% of its users by 2017.  That's only 3 years from now!

Academics at Princeton University used......get this, theories on the spread of disease combined with Google data on Facebook searches to predict the demise of the world's largest social network.  Most agree that Facebook is right above the "D" in decline in the business life cycle.  Whoa, it seems like Facebook was born yesterday, February 4, 2004 business lifecycle

Alex, they're crazy, it'll never happen, Facebook has over 1 billion users and is worth over $139 billion dollars.  Think again, the same researches found that Facebook searches on Google peaked in December 2012, "a similar spike was observed for MySpace months before it hit its peak in 2008, before heading into terminal decline." They predicted that one correctly too BTW.

Professor Daniel Miller, of University College London, said "simpler social networks such as Twitter and SnapChat will replace Facebook."  Do you have a plan to transition to something new for your marketing and SEO implementation?

UPDATED!!

So what a response I've been getting on comments....WOW....thanks guys. I've responded to everyone of them.  One of the comments by Anita Clark listed this link and was a response by Facebook to the study...actually it was more of a parody, thanks Anita hope you don't mind the hyperlink to ya?  Didn't take them long huh, I don't blame them and I would have done the same thing, particularly against the likes of Princeton and its scholars and the potential reputational damage such a study could cause.  BTW all the FB likes about this blog are gone....think Facebook had anything to do with it....open mouth, gasp, Alex Popovic no way!!!!!

Thanks again for all the comments I wish everyone of you much success regardless of the social media we use

I never liked MySpace and always thought it was stupid.  Facebook...well...if it declines, it declines.  I enjoy it now...I think it will settle down into what it was originally supposed to be - a social network...and many people will be comfortable with it. A new one will arise, and all the realtors will scramble to make it work for real estate, gurus will pop up overnight offering their services on how to make money off it...and the vicious cycle will happen all over again...and I'll still have my old friends on FB.  :)

Karen,

As long as we have back ups to our Social Media platforms for business purposes I think we'll be ok, the world certainly turned before FB, I think if it went "bye bye's" it would certainly keep on chuggin

Much is being said about teens dropping off Facebook.  My question is this:

Who cares?  Is there something wrong with FB being the method of communication for the 20 to 80 year olds?  That is a big niche.  A home buying niche too...

Ken,

I don't think it matters, nor does anyone really care, demographics and all age groups will use it until WIFM no longer benefits the individual.  Until then I'd use it all day long and do for my business websites

I already see my friends/family/self using FB less. The constant changes tend to put me off, but honestly, I am much older than their "target" market.

Liane,

Thanks for your comment, I think their targeted audience is constantly shifting, I think they're losing the younger generations by droves IMO

I think Twitter is too short and SnapChat too pervy to replace Facebook, you certainly may see something else completely new come along, but I can't see Twitter, SnapChat, or Pintrest taking over Facebook.

I am on Facebook more these days for work and about the same for private and I notice the middle and older age groups using it more.

My 18 year old says that we chased her generation off.

Here is what I do not like... keyboard warriors that rip someone for expressing your opinion. That is what chases a lot of people off.

Mike,

I love how the younger generation claims "we" chased them off.  You're going to always have "keyboard warriors", I'm dealing with some now who are about to get served with a federal lawsuit, they'll be spending so much time in a courtroom in AZ, perhaps I'll find them a rental or property to move into

Business do have a life cycle.  That is why they must always evolve to keep their competive edge.  Great blog and it is nice to hear that Facebook responded even if they didn't take your blog seriously.

Evelyn,

Thanks for responding, you're exactly right, I think they're fighting the inevitable and trying to stay as the top dog.  Just to clarify, FB never responded to me personally, they responded via the web to the Princeton theory.  They actually went even further and said that by 2021 Princeton will have NO students left.  They've been going at it pretty hard on the web

YEA and can't wait!  FB started out to be something we had to deal with, but they have changed their format and to be honest, it is very boring, not informative and I really don't care to see family or friends drunk!  WE have better outlets to be social.

Susan,

Too funny about the "drunk" friends and family.  You should see the programs and things you can find out about people who think they deleted a picture or post.  Ohhhh I've got some doozies about some people from their past, should come in handy soon

I find Facebook overly complex, but I do not find twitter and others better.  The users of Facebook are getting older.  Do I want to transition all my contacts to other SM?  Not really.  I think Facebook helps me to interact better than some of the other systems.  You know how expert predictions go?  On the other hand My Space and Yahoo are ancient history.  who knows.

I agree with you, who knows, it seems to still be fine and working right?  My theory is if it isn't broken don't fix it until it is

Hello Alex ... FB, Twitter & several other social networks are ... well ... quite boring! VB does use FB for friends, Twitter for ... well not really sure ;o/

And many of these social networks will fall off the wayside and new ones will come out! AR, LinkedIn, Google+, Wordpress and YouTube are my best ...

Love the post!

Hey Vegas Bob,

I finally get to meet you.  How are you?  Thanks for reading my blog.  I'm in total agreement with you, new industry partipants will enter and others will go away.  Like you I use pretty much the same platforms with Twitter and Vine sprinkled in
