Who rescued whom?

Three years ago two golden bundles of joy joined my family. We decided to rescue a golden retriever instead of buying one. Searching rescue shelter sites, I clicked on this adorable face..

Ruffie

And then I found out he had a brother.

Rhett

The dogs were older, somewhere between 6 and 8 years old. We hadn’t set out to get two but once we met them we knew they were our dogs. At the time I thought I was doing the rescuing but as time goes on I realize they have rescued me.

Ruffie has a never fixed broken tail. You would think, after everything he went through, he would hate people… but he doesn’t. He is always there with his tail waging so fast it goes several different directions at one time.  So we nick named him “Sir-Waggin’-Tail.” He’s always the first one to check on you if he thinks there is something wrong. It didn’t take Ruffie long to fit into the family and he loves to be loved. The lesson I learn every day from him is to be happy. You have to forgive and forget the things that have happened to you and live life.  Ruffie certainly does!

His brother Rhett doesn’t have any noticeable injuries, but he was not so quick to let us in. He was the quiet one who would cling to the wall away from the family. Even when he was sitting close he wanted to make sure he had an escape route. It’s taken about 2 ½ years but he finally became a dog. More like a puppy all over again! He also learned how much he loves to be loved.  Barking to get our attention or to play with the neighbor’s dogs is now one of his favorite things to do!  So he got the nickname “Sir-Barks-A-Lot”. He is now the classic goofy golden retriever. He’s taught me not to give up, to keep trying… because you will finally reach someone or something, whatever you’re striving for!

I always buried myself in my job and was always stressed about it.  These two dogs have rescued me from the life I was leading. They caused me to stop and enjoy the little things and to act silly once in a while. Ruffie and Rhett are the most caring, sweetest and many times silliest creatures in the world!  They are the best things that could have happened to me when I left the city and moved to southern Maryland.
