And The 2013 NAR Home Buyers and Sellers Survey Says...

surveyI just stumbled upon NAR's 2013 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers. To many of you this may be old news as it was released last November. Somehow I missed it. I thought I would pick out a couple of highlights and give you the link, in case you were interested in the report.

I came across information on the NAR article from, of all places, a "Sponsored Content" article written for, or on behalf of, ForSaleByOwner.com. Yes, you read that right! They are using the statistics from NAR to promote For Sale By Owner! I included a link to that article here as well.

That article appeared in the online Home section of the Chicago Tribune on January 23, 2013. At first glance the article appears to be the product of their own staff. It isn't. However, they use the phrase "Sponsored Content" instead of the usually seen Advertisement. I don't know if other parts of the country are seeing this as well. But I digress.

NAR's statistics are very interesting. According to their research, 92% of buyers use the internet during their home search, up slightly from 90% in 2012. Certainly not surprising, and it makes me wonder what the 8% not using the internet are actually looking at!

NAR also stated 88% of recent buyers and sellers used a real estate agent to buy or sell their home. Most startling to me is that in 2001, 69% of buyers used an agent to buy a home. That's an increase of nearly 20% in the last 12 years! I think that is significant. And encouraging.

For sellers of homes, the survey said that two-thirds contact only one agent prior to making an agent selection to assist in their sale. Lastly, only 9% sold their home without the assistance of an agent. Of that 9% selling their home on their own, 40% knew the buyer prior to the sale!

I thought this survey information was interesting and worth sharing. Check it out!

Do not worry most people want to sell within the regulations.  They want to have the property marketed correctly.  So these articles have been going on over my entire career.

Tom: This is very interesting data...I am thinking that some of this can be used in listing presentations with good effect.

Hi Tom - Thanks, I'll have to go get the latest numbers. We always use the "Where Buyers First Learned About The Home They Bought" data to show our sellers why, in most instances, print media isn't effective.

Tom- every agent should take a look to see what apparently is going on, and to find a way to use the stats to support your sales proposals.

Mark and Tim--Well, clearly 88% choose to use an agent. Works for me.

Anita--I think so too. Tammie and I will be incorporating some it as well.

Dick--The numbers are pretty startling, and moving towards even more using the internet.

Donna--I agree. I don't remember seeing a post about it in November or December...

Kathy--Yep, that's what we'll be doing.

Tom, I think this is interesting data as well. Like all "data" and "statistics" it can be manipulated.  I'm not all that trusting of anything NAR reports on.

Kathleen--You are one cynical person! You actually made me chuckle. If the data is favorable, I'm using it!

I don't do very well when it comes to paying much attentions to any kind of survey. I would rather look first hand what is going on around me.

Joe--In my previous life I conducted quite a few surveys, so I recognize how data can be manipulated. But...I like to compare what I see in my local area with what national surveys reveal.

Tom, you know what I learned from your blog? That since ActiveRain and sites like it have been in existence, 20% more people are using a real estate agent to list and sell their home.  While I just gave AR the credit, because they provided all of us a platform, it is really our credit for blogging and putting information in the hands of buyers and sellers.  WE MADE THE DIFFERENCE!

Tom it is interesting to look at these statistics and sometime see how different things might be in the local market, which is what counts.  Read a New York Stat today which was so rosy, low inventory, rising prices, it is true when you factor in NYC which is a very hot market.
