A Shooting At My Doorstep

Breaking News this morning, January 25th, 2014: Shooting at the Mall in Columbia, MD

That is not a headline I could have ever imagined.

Columbia, MD is considered a safe place to live. Columbia, MDIn 2012 it was voted the eighth best small city to live in the USA by CNNMoney.

I live and work in Howard County, MD and just passed by the Mall in Columbia yesterday on my way to showing houses. It is practically at my door step.

Breaking News this morning, shockingly and unbelievably, it's all about the Mall in Columbia, MD.

However, it won't stop me from promoting Columbia, MD as a great place to live, work and play. This planned community has so much to offer. The shooting does not define the city.

It's the act of one crazy, violent individual who lacked morals, integrity, empathy and respect. He does not represent what Howard County and Columbia, MD stand for - no matter how much the media will sensationalize the shooting.

My heart goes out to the victims (3 are believed dead at this point in time) and their families.

That is terrble news. It's a sign of the times we live in now I suppose.  It also shows this type of random violence can happen anywhere, anytime.

Years ago in my small town an estranged husband walked into the local Lowe's and shot his wife.  He then walked out and got in her car and shot himself.  That didn't define my city and no one thinks about it when we go into that store anymore.  I'm hearing on the  news this might also be "domestic" related.  I'm sure happy to know you are fine.

It is terrible John. Anywhere, anytime.. that is scary. But we can't let that stop us from living our lives.

It does make you wonder Bob. After airplanes, movie theaters, schools, colleges.. where is one still safe? But, again, we have to live our lives. The HCPD did an outstanding job and so did people at the mall, herding others to a safe place, locking the doors and waiting for police to arrive.

Hi Tammy, according to the Police Department the motive has not been confirmed, it being domestic is speculation at this point in time. It's a tragedy, no matter how you look at it.

It wouldn't surprise me to see headlines such as "Is Columbia still safe/good place to live?" in the days ahead. My answer is, absolutely.

That thought makes you pause, doesn't it Beth?

How absolutely sad Andrea!  Ugh.  We actually just had a shooting right down the road at our local Bar Louies...I think the victims are OK though.  Scary that it was so close.  With that shooting in Florida at the Movie Theaters..this just gets ridiculous.  I don't care what's going on, we need to have some better gun control laws IMO.

I saw this headline earlier today. I'm so glad you and your girls weren't at the mall. I can't understand why we've had this rash of public shootings lately.

I completely agree with you Brenda. Tragedies like these happen too often, it's not OK and I refuse to accept that this is "our new normal".

I'm glad we didn't go Debbie and I feel for all the people who had to experience such trauma. They've identified the 2 victims (the 3rd one was the shooter) - 18 and 25 yrs old. I hope they are wrapped up tightly in the arms of an angel.

We know it Chris Ann but with every tragedy we think 'not in my neck of the woods' and then it happens at your doorstep.
