The unemployment numbers released for the State of Florida for December 2013 where 6.2%, a great improvement over previous years, and the counties that Lakewood Ranch resides in, Manatee county and Sarasota County, were exceptional. Manatee county unemployment for the month of December 2013 was 5.8%. Sarasota County unemployment for the month of December 2013 was 5.6%. These are terrific unemployment numbers for the counties that encompass Lakewood Ranch.
An article by Jo-Lynn Brown "Bay area unemployment drops below 6 percent in December", released on January 24, 2014 in the Tampa Bay Business Journal, highlighted the bright spots in Tampa Bay unemployment numbers, with the Suncoast's own Manatee and Saraota Counties coming in among the lowest numbers.
Naturally this is positive news both for established residents and for those relocating to the area. It is also good news for those that enjoy the Suncoast as a vacation destination. Stability in the job markets in turn helps keep the community in good health and makes for a great place to live, work and play.
Over the past several years during the economic down turn, many residences became rundown and unsightly. The lack of jobs, work, money and the excess emotional stress on residents effected by the downturn led to an excess of run down homes, an unprecedented amount of short-sales and a glut of foreclosures. The latter being of most concern to many neighbors as there was nothing that could be done. Some homes in their neighborhoods were left abandoned until banks were ready or able to act. This left even those without any monetary stress being effected by the downturn.
With the positive unemployment numbers comes renewed optimism and regeneration in the communities within Manatee and Sarasota Counties. It can be seen all around Lakewood Ranch and the adjacent communities. New construction is booming, while short-sales and foreclosures are much more rare. At one time more than 50% of all sales in these areas were distressed home sales. Today they are down to about 1/10 of sales in Manatee County and Sarasota County.
Of course many people are still hesitant to believe the good economic news will last, and enthusiastic optimism will likely be on hold until well after the winter "snowbird season" has concluded. But for now, as jobs in Lakewood Ranch - Manatee & Sarasota see low unemployment, residents can enjoy some temporary relief.
