Competence or Confidence?
Which is more important? Which one wins over clients? Which one is more effective? Do you need a little bit of both? Can you get by with a lot of one and a little of the other?
I like to think I have both and, if my work speaks for anything, is that I'm confident in my competence and I am competently confident.
Basically, I am confident in my ability to do my work in the best possible way so that my clients come out on top, satisfied and ready to begin their retirement anew but I am not so naive and overconfident that I will promise something I cannot deliver.
I think an overabundance of confident can hinder a deal in the long run while competence can only make your client list grow. Sure, being confidence is always a plus, especially when making a first impression, but that can quickly die off as soon as your clients discover just how component you are. Or rather INcompetent.
I believe in the power of word of mouth because people believe people, they talk to people, they like that interaction. I'm the same way and that's why competence will always win out in the end even above confidence. Confidence is attractive and it inspires confidence but it needs to be backed up with competence and that is in short supply at times.
There should be a balance between the two but that is definitely wishful thinking. In the raging battle for one over the other, be confidence, to a degree, and be the most competent you can be because it will definitely be what your clients (presently and in the future) will come back for.
Be confident in your competence and competently confident and the sky's the limit.
