When free is 1000 times better than $280

It was finally time to upgrade my cell phone.  Mind you,  my five year old one did what I needed it to - send and receive calls, send and receive texts , and access the internet, but I couldn’t get apps and it kept crashing on me.  Kicking and screaming, my husband dragged me off to the Verizon store.

Upon our arrival, we  were greeted at the door by someone who took our name, put it into a tablet and told us there were two people in front of us and someone would be with us shortly.  38 minutes later, someone called my name.  After asking my phone #,  his next words were, “Oh, you pay your bills on time.”  HUH?  Then, what brings you here today.  I told him what I was looking for and he quoted me $250 plus a $30 activation fee.  Mind you, this didn’t include a protective case or clear front cover (another blog.)

My reaction, another HUH?  After 14 years with this carrier and “entitled” to an upgrade, I now have to pay another $280 for a new phone and activation?  Really?

Upon my return home, I searched on line and found the same phone for FREE with no activation fee at Best Buy.  Upon arrival at Best Buy, we were greeted at the store and directed to the phone area.  A wonderfully knowledgeable, professional and PATIENT sales person helped us immediately without a half hour wait.  Then, Best Buy has a Samsung experience booth where a Samsung representative patiently spent over an hour with me showing me features and functions of my new FREE phone.

Not only did it pay to shop around, it turned out to be a MUCH better experience - FREE, patient and professional staff with NO WAITING.  Guess where I’ll go in five years for an upgrade?

Juli  It never ceases to amaze me how some companies go blindly along without checking the competition

Verizon online support is the absolute best - for everything.  However their stores, are horrendous. Too bad, because they have the best coverage.

Karen, the first experience was out of control STUPID.  The second so over the board wonderful.  What a stark contrast.

Jane, I can't agree with you more, Verizon IS wonderful to work with and I seldom have dropped calls.  But, retail wise - not so much.

Larry, you're so right!!!  I'm so surprised at the price difference and, more importantly at the service level.  What a difference.

Mom, I asked the sales person to talk to a manager and he said it was "store policy."  Besides, they don't have that helpful Samsung booth with someone there to help you with all the new features FOR FREE!!!

My last two phones were bought through Best Buy. I got discounts there that the AT&T store wouldn't do. By the way, every time you go into the carrier stores for help they will run your credit. That is what my son told me that works in the credit dept.of Verizon. I wonder if they would confiscate your phone if you were in default or lock out your service.

Debbie, I hadn't heard about them pulling your credit - just checking their status with them.  And, all they would have to do is cancel your service if you weren't paying.  Since you own the phone, I'm fairly certain that would be theft and I would think they would avoid that at all costs.  I'd love to hear anyone else's input on that idea.

Oh, and Debbie, as an add on - they aren't allowed to pull your credit without your explicit permission, so I'm sure it's just checking your payment status with their own company.  Otherwise,we're talking MAJOR law suits and I'd be first in line.

Juli, this doesn't bode well for me.  I'm due for an upgrade so it's off to the Verizon store for me...we'll see.
